Definitions

Optical flow: the pattern of apparent motion of objects. One camera, two images, for each pixel find the movement.

Scene flow: the position and direction of each visual point: z-distance + direction. Two camera, four images.

Stereo vision: estimation of the z-distance from two camera.

Disparity map: difference in image location of objects seen by two cameras.

Epipolar geometry: geometry of stereo vision: given a disparity map, compute the z-distance of each point.

Dropout: disable temporary some neurones to avoid overfitting by limiting the coupling of the neurones.

Softmax: generate a distribution probability give a set of inputs weigths. It is a normanlized exponential: for each class, compute the exponent of the value and divide it by of sum of the exponent of the other classes.

softmax(x_i) = exp(x_i) / sum_j ( exp(x_j) )

Caffe opinion

Good to:

  • to create complex model
  • to make repeatable experiences and change params
  • to eliminate implementation issues
  • to display networks topology
  • to exchange models with others people
  • to compare optimization solution
  • to study and plot accuracy
  • to switch between GPU and CPU
  • to separate implementation from network description

Bad for:

  • hand craft optmizations
  • input / output format not obvious
  • not very well documented
  • general machine learning solution (just for neural networks)

Tensorflow explained

Caffee: great, let you configure your network. but we need more expressivity.

numpy gives you high level tensor operations, but does not do the derivation and the optimization needed for deep learning. as well, it does not do GPU.

So let says we want to do deep learning on GPU (or on a remote cluster of machines). In this case, we will not implements the operations locally, we can not load the data locally and we will not do step-by-step (interractive) operation. Instead we need to (1) build the set of operation and (2) send it to the compute unit (i.e. GPU) and (3) feed it with the data.

Tensorflow let you build a graph of computations on tensors.

Next, in the contect of deeplearning, the same operation will be used for each batch on the training set. The input are configurable (this is called a placeholder). And placeholder can be set to anything. When i measure the accuracy on the test set, i switch the training set placeholder to the test set. If I want to compare the dropout rate, i just change the dropout placeholder value from 1.0 to 0.5.

TensorFlow uses the concept of placeholder to parametrize the computation. Placeholders are feed with feeds.

To measure accuracy evolution, one need the intermediate result during the training, for example at each 100 steps. it is also usefull to print the evolution of the weight to inspect if they vanish or explose. Or it can be interresting to capture the convolution filters. All those data can saved for later analysis and ploted to a graph for comparison. This is what summaries are for: tensorflow let you create summaries with name and record them with a step number. They can later be analysis from within the web interface.

Sumaries let you agretage results and plot internal states of the networks.

Lastly, when machine learning practitioners tend to think visulally about neural networks and echange with peers using those visual representations. Those graphical expression represents high level representations of the computations. Tensorflow let you name and scope operations so that it can create for you the visual representation of the network. This is extremly usefull to study someone else complex model without having to dive into the code.

Scopes and named operations let you plot the neural network and inspect it without having to read the source code.
