If you’re traveling outside of your home country and your phone is lost, stolen, broken or goes for a swim, or the app tries to update -or fails- you might not be able to install the G7 app on your existing or replacement phone. If this happens to you, unless you have brought a different Loopable CGM (like the G6, ONE or ONE+), you have two options for continuing to Loop, and both involve manually entering glucose readings into Loop:
Our Best Advice (other than be extra careful and lucky):
Here is more info on G7 and other Dexcom CGMs. Note that the ONE+ requires a customization to the main
branch for the Loop app, but is included in the dev branch
. So make sure you have the correct version installed if you have access to the ONE+ and plan to use it. We do also acknowledge that it would be rare for someone to have both G7/G6 and ONE+/ONE.
The good news (only kidding, it's not that good) is that there are rumors that Dexcom is working to resolve this issue by the end of the year, so if you're staying home until 2025, geofencing shouldn't be an issue.

They can also be supportive by sharing data for safety’s sake, through such apps as Nightscout, Loop Follow, Gluroo, Happy Bob, Dexcom Follow, or Sugarmate. Some of our diabuddies

Highlights for the improvements:
🔋 Battery Efficiency
While we've aimed to reduce battery consumption, we're not promising miracles. The Loop Follow app might still be among the apps that drain your battery the most. However, we have optimized how Carbs Today, SAGE, and CAGE data are fetched, and we hope this results in a more efficient performance. Please share your observations regarding any changes in battery life.
📆 Sensor Start Date Issues
We have addressed a peculiar issue where the Loop dev may be uploading sensor start dates set to the year 2159, affecting SAGE readings. This version will ignore future sensor start dates.
🔢 New Versioning
Starting with this release, you will see versioning in the Loop Follow app. Check the bottom of the settings page for the version number—this release is labeled as 2.0.0. While not a major milestone, it's a starting point for future refinements.
🛠️ Code Refactoring
Behind the scenes, we have overhauled how Nightscout data is downloaded and processed, involving more than 2000 lines of code. This comprehensive change could potentially introduce undiscovered bugs, so please report any issues you encounter.

The importance of widespread population screening was a central topic. It's not just about one stage of diabetes, when the disease has already set in. Unlike previous conferences (ISPAD2022, ATTD2023) while speaking a lot about Stage 1 and Stage 2 of type 1 diabetes (before clinical diagnosis), this time, much attention was given to what's being called Stage 4 of diabetes - long standing T1D.
The evidence is clear: we should not simply wait for a universal solution to type 1 diabetes. There are various cures in the pipeline, and one size does not fit all.
Scientists are passionately embracing the #WeAreNotWaiting mantra as well, in pursuit of a cure. The hot topics of the conference revolved around prevention, screening, immunotherapy, and beta cell replacements. DIY (Do-It-Yourself) presentations, including those by Lenka Petruzelkova (AAPS) and Katarina Braune (who, herself, is fully looped on iAPS), have become a significant part of ISPAD.
The presence of people living with diabetes and caregivers under the #dedoc umbrella is now an essential aspect, both in the present and for the future. The most powerful resource for learning about diabetes is sharing and listening to those who live with it 24/7.
Children with Diabetes provides helpful information for Halloween.

Last week, several Loop and Learn team members attended the DiabetesMine Fall 2023 Innovation Summit and d-data exChange
in San Diego, California. It’s a smaller conference but it focuses on the bleeding edge of diabetes technology and innovation. Over the course of two days, many fascinating presentations were given, ranging from a start-up’s debut to commercial Goliaths putting their newest products on display.
Kicking off the event was Dean Kamen. He is the inventor (1976) of the first wearable insulin pump, AutoSyringe. He also developed the iBot which led to the Segway. Other projects include the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine and the FIRST Robotics Competition
and don't miss this cool advertisement created when the competition went global: FIRST Global - Not A Robot. His current projects include both mass producing beta cell lines for research and a new insulin pump that delivers in the intradermal layer instead of the subcutaneous layer which should make it faster and more efficient.
Later in the event, there was also a presentation for a new open source CGM that reads glucose in the intradermal layer with essentially no lag time.
Event activities also included a fashion show and crafts session with diabetes supplies and a brainstorming session about the pros and cons of real time CGM access in the healthcare realm.
Since d-data
was the birthplace of the #WeAreNotWaiting movement, in 2013, it was appropriate that DIY legend Ben West gave a presentation on keeping diabetes open source innovation alive. Other open source presentations included iAPS, and a new fully closed loop (FCL) system by Nascence Biomed combining an offshoot of AndroidAPS with proprietary commercial pump drivers, and Boost which utilizes heart rate and a step counter to help automate an FCL.
As intriguing as the presentations were, though, I think the networking and meeting so many other like-minded individuals from across the DIY diabetes community was my favorite part. There’s just something about being with so many other people who understand what we’re all going through and who are constantly pushing for new innovations. We even went out for pizza and gelato where a whole table didn’t bolus and just let their DIY system automate everything for them.

There was an interesting discussion in the iAPS Facebook group on what are reasonable expectations for results. Many of the ideas apply to any method of diabetes management.
The Loop and Learn team took some of that conversation and summarized it for this edition of the news. Thanks to Odd Stoltenberg for permission to paraphrase his words.
Do not ignore the importance of quality of life and your psychological state - it is important not to get burned out
Do not compare your diabetes results with others without considering how their lifestyle and personality may differ from yours, as well as what other treatments they may be using
Treatments have to work for you (or your child), and nobody but you can say where that balance should be in life and in diabetes management
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) published a joint consensus for The Management of Type 1 Diabetes in Adults. They suggest that results be measured over 3 months. Don't just consider your best or worst days. The goals are:
Measurement Goal Time In Range (TIR) of 70-180 mg/dL (3.9-10.0 mmol/L) >70% of the time A1C < 7.0% (53 mmol/mol) Readings <70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) <4% of the time Readings <54 mg/dL (3.0 mmol/L) <1% of the time Readings >180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L) <25% of the time Readings >250 mg/dL (13.9 mmol/L) <5% of the timeWhen taken together, Time In Range (TIR) and A1C are considered the standard way of comparing diabetes status. There are other ways of describing results, but they have not been generally adopted.
There are many posts by enthusiasts for particular methods who present stories that may leave out important information, such as:
Individual physical condition and genetics can affect metabolism and how the body reacts overall to food, insulin and exercise
The time the individual spent learning about the medical and technical aspects of their diabetes management
The personality of the individual
Whether additional medications are used
Any discussion stating what should be achievable can be difficult - since that often leaves a considerable number of people behind that cannot achieve what others say they should. For these people, discussions that are polarized or very assertive - are unfortunate!
Listen to what people say, but also note that there may be more variables than were mentioned - or even realized.

They can also be supportive by sharing data for safety’s sake, through such apps as Nightscout, Loop Follow, Gluroo, Happy Bob, Dexcom Follow, or Sugarmate. Some of our diabuddies
have helped each other by calling to check in during nighttime low alarms and have even managed Loop remotely during surgeries! We urge you to get a diabuddy

edition/2024-01-21/#automatic-temp-basal-vs-manual-temp-basal
Automatic Temp Basal vs Manual Temp Basal
A Temporary Basal (TB) is an automatic feature that the Loop uses in Closed Loop
mode to regulate insulin delivery every 5 minutes. Loop uses user-input settings and entries to determine when to enact a TB and when to return to scheduled basal. If the user has selected Automatic Bolus Dosing Strategy, then TB are only used to reduce the amount of insulin delivered. The TB automatically issued by the Loop app all have a duration of 30 minutes. If no further commands are detected by the pump, at the end of 30 minutes, the pump returns to scheduled basal delivery.
A Manual Temporary Basal (MTB) is a user-selected setting that keeps insulin delivery steady at a user-defined rate for the user-defined duration (from 30 minutes up to 12 hours). In addition, the Loop app disables closed-loop
operation, if enabled, and at after the MTB duration completes, it restores closed-loop
configuration. If you use a Medtronic pump, you need to disable closed-loop
, set MTB on your Medtronic pump and restore normal operation when done.
Under normal operation: The Loop app always sets a 30-minute duration for TB. If the next prediction needs the same TB as the previous one, the TB is not modified to save the load on pump batteries. After 20 minutes, if the same TB is still required, then a new one is issued.
If connection with the phone is lost: The pump resumes scheduled basal between 10 and 30 minutes later, depending on when the last TB was initiated.

If you turn off automatic time and manually change the time while using the Loop app, you might get into a situation where the app crashes repeatedly. You can turn off permissions for Loop
in Apple Health and might be able to operate, but this limits long-term storage on your phone. Set Screen Time, with a PIN, which will disable your -or your child’s- ability to change the phone’s time. If the Loop app continues to crash because of a time change, even after you restore time to automatic, you will have to delete Loop off the phone completely, rebuild a fresh version, and repopulate all settings, overrides and options to resolve the issue.
Why would someone change the time on their phone?
One reason is to get more gaming time. So if you or your T1D child use the Loop phone for gaming, do yourself a favor and don’t change the time! Lock out the options with: iOS Settings, Screen Time, Lock Screen Time Settings and apply a PIN. This disables the ability for anything other than automatic time.
To check that your phone is on automatic time, go to iOS Settings, General, Date & Time.

If you’re on the fence, deciding whether you want to give Loop a try, read some of the posts- they may just push you over the edge!
The following post was written by Magnus Reintz in the iAPS Facebook group. The specific update mentioned here is from 2.3.3 to 3.0, but this holds for all updates in the future.
For those readers who use iAPS, please wait to update any iAPS release until experts in the community have a chance to test and confirm the release.
Post from 10 February 2024 repeated here:
iAPS has had a large increase in users over the last year. However, the development method has not changed. iAPS is still maintained by Jon B. Mårtensson with contributions from other developers. Jon decides when to merge code into the different branches, and he decides when to make a Main release. Jon is not on Facebook, and will not be commenting on this post. He is available on Discord.
With the increasing number of users, some of us (including Theresa Hastings, Dan H. Moody, Tom Barrows, Mike Plante, and many more) have tried to help Jon move towards a more controlled release cycle, with peer programming, proper release testing, improved documentation, etc. Jon, bless him, spends most of his free time developing iAPS. He believes that changing the ways of work will slow down development and take away his freedom to choose what to do with the app. I believe he is right, but I still believe this is what should be done - to make sure iAPS has a level of quality that matches the increasing number of users. It's not just a few advanced users anymore.
With the help from Kelsey Huss we also got Scott and Dana (authors of the Oref algorithm) involved, to try to find a way to move things forward in a safe manner. Still, all code from the DEV branch was merged into MAIN and released as version 3.0 today.
The release notes are not complete. We know that this version contains several bug fixes, some design changes and some new features. That is a good thing! But we also know that this release contains code that has not been tested for more than a couple of days, and other changes that should have been tested on a broader user base before releasing to everyone - like the new bolus calculator, and new remote features.
I believe that iAPS Main 3.0 is an experimental app at the moment. It should be used with caution, only by people who are closely following the Discord group and ready to re-build on short notice. If you decide to use iAPS Main 3.0 now, you should be prepared for it not to work as expected. That includes bringing along low treatments, extra pods, your PDM (if you use Omnipod) and insulin pens at all times.
Some of us will devote our time to testing this release and let you all know when it is safe. This will take time.

Another source of battery drain affects Dexcom and Anubis transmitters. Our friends at Anubis warn that the xDrip4iOS and Shuggah apps both drain the batteries of these transmitters at a rapid rate. Thankfully, we hear that a fix is in the works.

Site Stability
Those of us who use pods
occasionally encounter site issues like leaky pods
, bloody sites, bruising, and painful sites, which can lead to poor absorption. Fortunately, a simple and effective solution has been suggested by a user on Discord and tested by several members of our team, yielding positive results. If you're experiencing any of these problems, you can consider this method.
The information given here is based on personal experiences and is not intended as medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your treatment.
Consider the fact that this method depends on inserting the cannula through a piece of medical tape attached to the skin. You may not be willing to take that action.
The method involves placing a piece of Tegaderm or OpSite Flexifix dressing on your skin prior to applying your pod
. Apply the pod
directly over it without cutting a hole for the cannula. The dressing only needs to be in the area of the cannula, it does not need to be as big as the pod
. This technique has been successful in stabilizing the cannula and preventing many of the aforementioned issues, ultimately extending the use time of the site.
The rationale behind this approach is that it stabilizes where the cannula enters the skin, limiting motion that can lead to leaking. Several members report the site remains functional for a longer duration with more stability in day-to-day insulin needs.
For individuals dealing with pod
adhesive irritation, apply a sufficiently large piece of dressing to fit under the entire pod
. Additionally, spraying Flonase on the area and allowing it to dry before applying any dressing can help mitigate adhesive-related issues.
Some ways we can tell we have a leaky pod

When you enter carbs, the Loop app makes a meal bolus recommendation that will keep your glucose just above your Glucose Safety Limit. But in the next Loop cycle, it may restrict basal rate with a zero temp basal because it is considering your Correction Range. As your glucose rises following the meal, Loop will not automatically provide insulin until your current glucose rises into your Correction Range.
This Tip lets you temporarily lower your correction range so the Loop app begins to respond (automatically) as soon as your glucose starts to rise.
Option 1: Use Premeal target after carb entry
Option 2: Create a named override

A while later, she found that her CGM reading was actually almost 10X what her real blood glucose level was and had an emergency on her hands. Thankfully, she remained safe! Many CGM users report never doing fingersticks, but we ask you to rethink that, even if only after starting new sensors, as they often come online reading incorrectly.

If two entries are made with the same hour: minute: second eating time, Nightscout keeps only one of the entries.
The Loop app handles the entries as unique so there can be a mismatch in what the Caregiver sees in Nightscout compared to the Looper's actual meal history.
When adding a second remote carbohydrate entry for the same meal, increase the time for that entry by one minute. This will ensure that Nightscout keeps both of entries. For more details, see this explanation.

While this may seem like a strategy to expedite issue resolution, it's crucial to remember that this is a volunteer-driven online community. Every moment spent contributing is volunteered time. Cross-posting often results in duplicated efforts, with multiple volunteers unknowingly responding to the same query. Consequently, valuable time is squandered, hindering assistance for others awaiting responses.
Instead, consider the most relevant group for your question and post it there exclusively. If you don't receive a timely response, you can either "bump" your post or delete it from one group and repost it in another. This approach ensures efficient use of volunteer time and prioritizes equitable assistance for all community members.

The 17th Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes (ATTD) conference, held from March 6th to 9th in Florence, Italy, showcased the latest innovations in diabetes management with a record attendance of over 5,300 participants from 96 countries.
Co-chaired by Tadej Battelino of the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, the conference emphasized patient needs, including the importance of language in provider-patient communication, and discussed hot topics like stem cell therapy and type 1 diabetes prevention. Early detection, especially in Italy, which initiated the world’s first antibody screening program this year, was also topical. A big highlight was the presentation of a consensus position statement on DIY systems, which aligns with that of Italian Scientific Societies. Efforts to bridge gaps in diabetes technology access and affordability were also highlighted, and immunotherapy, type 2 diabetes, women’s diabetes issues, and interoperability were also discussed.
In terms of technology, the integration of pumps and CGM
(Continuous Glucose Monitoring) into one device and non-invasive glucometers capable of detecting glucose in breath samples were of interest. It will be interesting to see which of these innovative technologies will become mainstream! There is an expectation of achieving a fully closed-loop commercial system in the next 3-5 years, with CGM
being pushed as the standard of care for every person living with diabetes (PWD
). Similarly, GLP-1/SLGT-2s are being promoted, but there is growing concern that long-term use might have downsides, and when PWD
stop using them, they often experience more pronounced issues than before using them.
There is still a huge gap in professionals’ understanding of PWD
and the significant mental burden associated with it. Efforts such as the UNLOK educational program, along with the introduction of more AI tools and learning programs for healthcare professionals, aim to bridge this gap. Additionally, the Diabetes Technology Expert program, presented by Dr. Inge Van Boxelaer, a certified diabetes instructor and endocrinologist, is/will be available in 30 languages. It offers free learning modules focusing on open-source AID systems: AAPS, Loop, and iAPS.
We appreciate Dr. Inge's outreach to our Loop and Learn community for feedback and consultation. Miroslava Calegari, a member of our team, revised the Loop module of the Program.

✅ Manual BG Values Display: Now, manual blood glucose values entered in Loop or AppleHealth are available in LoopFollow. We've also fixed a bug where mmol/L manual BG checks from Nightscout weren't displaying correctly.
✅ URL Sanitization and Validation: We've enhanced the user experience by ensuring that URL input is sanitized—any characters not allowed in a URL are automatically removed.
✅ Speech Output Improvements: We've improved the clarity of speech outputs by replacing commas (when used as decimal separators) with periods. This makes spoken content easier to understand.
✅ Behind the scenes, we've updated the Gemfile.lock and bumped Fastlane to 2.220.0!
✅ Recommended Bolus Alert: Stay on top of your management with alerts for recommended boluses. The default sound is a catchy drum beat that visually connects with the picture in the background of this page. Customize the alert thresholds to suit your preferences.
✅ Paste URL with Token: Setting up has never been easier! You can now paste the entire URL, including the token, directly into the URL field. Just copy the URL+token from Nightscout (for example, https://my.nightscout.com/?token=demo-3eda1548fee5d314

Why? Because it helps you know the app better and be more confident in your building capabilities. This is highly valuable if you should find yourself in a pinch for time. It also affords you the opportunity to update your app and add new helpful customizations.
If you did a Browser build, the app expires in 90 days due to TestFlight limitations. Browser builders, however, have the very handy capability of triggering a rebuild from their phone.
The main
branch, version 3.2.3 does not report the TestFlight expiration date in the Loop app
dev
branch, which is very stable and should soon be released as the next versionmain
branch after the releaseThe dev
branch, if selected as the default branch for your fork, is configured to automatically rebuild the Loop app at least once a month or within a week after an update is published
Regardless of which browser build branch
you select, you can always check TestFlight to see when your Loop app will expire and make sure you have a new version to install so you are not left without your automatic insulin delivery system.

Here’s what’s happening to at least some of us: The default date for Event Time is the UTC date, although it uses local time for time of day. If a time of "Now" is selected, this information is ignored, so it works- unless it’s after 6pm local. Then it looks like the entry doesn’t take, but it’s really being entered for the next day at that time. This looks to be true for all types of events, not just remote carbs. Requests for code change to correct this have been submitted.

You can tinker with the percentage to tune current/ future sensitivity by getting the ICE screen happy for past carbs! For this to work, you need to restart the app between changes. This technique really shines during sickness when you know needs are higher, but aren’t sure how much higher ahead of time.

edition/2024-05-26/#hack-2-overrides
Hack #2: Overrides
One other group expert says: I set my biking override to be longer than my expected ride. When I return, I edit the insulin needs from 65% (needed while I'm actively biking) back to 100%. My negative IOB typically doubles at that change. I then disable the override and take the full negative IOB as a bolus. This helps prevent a post-exercise high that often follows my ride.
I do not enter any carbs while biking and almost always ride first thing in the morning while fasting, so I just edit the override. If no carbohydrates are active, there is no need to quit and restart the app. (This idea is included in the “Recalculate When Needs Change” section of LoopDocs.)

If you want to enter glucose manually in your Loop app because your Dexcom G6 CGM is off, first delete CGM from Loop and then can use HUD -or you can enter directly into Apple Health and not wait 15 minutes for the last CGM reading to be reported as stale. You may have heard that Trio (a version of OpenAPS on an iPhone) is open for beta testing. What does that mean?
If you play video games you may have heard about games being released as a "Beta test”. The same concept is used in Open-Source Automated Insulin Delivery (OS-AID) systems, also known as DIY.
Essentially, the developers categorized the known issues, added some new features and prepared a list of items that users need to be aware of. Because this is an insulin-dosing algorithm rather than a game, extra care is used. Before announcing the beta test, the Trio developers kept the repositories private. As part of the private testing, the developers used this app on themselves as well as test phones. They had the advantage of starting with iAPS version 2.3.3 so they could build on the work of many developers. Once they felt it was ready for beta test, the repositories were opened for public access.
During the beta test, the app is only recommended for experienced testers. As it nears the end of beta test, there will be a release candidate (for final review) followed by a release to Trio version 1.0.0. The Trio developers know there is a lot of excitement, but please wait for the release unless you are willing to follow along in discord as a beta tester.
If you want a peak under the hood, this link provides a preliminary look at the Trio updates.

is someone who can help you with your diabetes when you need it.
Diabuddies
are the best! They’re not just friends with diabetes in common, but they offer encouragement and support like few other people can.
We urge you to get a diabuddy
and make a plan for when help is needed.
Think ahead: If you have a medical procedure that may leave you confused or sleepy - make sure you have someone who will check that your pump is working properly afterward. Or you could make plans to add a long-acting insulin option. Be safe - avoid DKA.

Your feedback is invaluable to us, and we eagerly await your thoughts on this update for the Loop Follow App.

Thanks to Mike Plante, Loop and Learn administrator and group expert for these meeting highlights!

Some of our diabuddies

mode to regulate insulin delivery every 5 minutes.

Option 2: Create a named override

If a mentor asks you to post the same information in a different location - that is different. Please leave your original post up so people in the current group can follow to the new location.

“We understand that it has been quiet for a while. It has been quiet because we have a group of developers diligently working in the background to create something that we have now titled “Open-iAPS.” The people who come together when the DIY community is in need is amazing. We have had folks from all the different DIY systems come together to collaborate on this project.
While it's difficult to predict the exact timeline of a project, we're excited to share the significant strides we've made over the past months. We made a crucial decision to create a fully open-source and peer-reviewed version of iAPS. A dedicated team of developers, project managers, and support staff was formed to shape our future vision. They've successfully forked the version 2.3.3 code base and have been diligently working to streamline the code, enhance its stability, and enable a wider review by the community.
We are very close to opening testing to beta testers. Please ensure you have filled out the volunteer form, so we can contact you. We hope that beta testing will be completed quickly and thoroughly so we can open the branch to the group.”
According to Theresa Hastings, the best candidates for testers are super users who are, at a bare minimum, familiar with reporting bugs. Parents/ caregivers should not be testing this on their children. If you are interested in being a tester and fit these specs, please fill out this Google form and select the Quality Assurance option.

Even though many of us successfully manage T1D, the chronic nature and constant need for monitoring can create significant emotional stress. This stress makes us more susceptible to quick fixes or miracle cures. Our desire for solutions can make us vulnerable to charlatans or unproven therapies.
The vast amount of information available online can be overwhelming. Differentiating between credible sources and misinformation can be challenging, especially when sensational claims are involved. Voices that used to be credible may now be tainted by financial motivation.
Managing T1D effectively requires a balance between leveraging new technologies and relying on proven, evidence-based practices. Stay vigilant and make informed decisions about your health.

There are three issues that people who build their own app need to be aware of:
The next released version of iOS is expected in September 2024.

Often, one of them doesn’t adequately match what is being searched for, so results are not returned. Start with one- or two-word terms and add to them if you get too many hits and need to narrow them down.
In LoopDocs, sometimes only part of a word is best:
If you type "auth" in the search box, you are shown links that include the words "authenticate", "authorization" and "authentication"
If you type "authorize" in the search box, no links are provided
A reminder: do your Browser (or Mac-Xcode) rebuild early to ensure that you are never without your app. Browser builds last for 90 days and Mac-Xcode builds last for a year.
Sometimes we find that time is shorter than we expected or there is a problem building that you need help with. Build early and keep on looping!
