Saving auto_action setting to enable auto reboot at startup

I set the auto_action SRM variable to BOOT, but i can never seem to get this saved in such a way that the emulator remembers this on the next startup. I have to be missing something obvious - this is driving me crazy.

How do i get the auto_action value to be preserved across invocations of the simulator? It is remembering my bootdef_dev, just not the auto_action.
