@martin8032 I can't seem to find the footer in the list of potential jobs (I'm specifically looking at / filtering for "not translated"). Do you see anything we could forward to Artyom?

@Popolechien The footer is not part of the regular content and is not translated in the same way. Please ask Artyom to send me the translation by email, I will then implement it. BTW: The French and the German footer is not translated as well.

I don't know what is reasonably possible. But this sounds important to me the footer to be transalable using the same process like the rest. Indeed we should translate it in other languages as well.

i've sent an excel sheet with the 17 strings to Artyom, and I've included French in it.

It is possible, but it's not the same process. My intention was to offer a quick solution. If you want to manage these translations yourself, you can do so by using the WPML String Translation module: https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/string-translation/

Russian, French and German should now be fine (minus the Download column but it is being handled)

Footer links in French (actually they are not translated either) are pointing to content in English. They should all point to the version in Ftench of articles.

@kelson42 This only happens if the pages are available in French, otherwise I believe it defaults to English.

Which links exactly are we talking about?

@Popolechien Can we do something to translate important pages linked in the footer?

@kelson42 I've made a call for translators.

https://www.kiwix.org/en/downloads/browser-extensions/ Is not translated at all in french. Can we secure that web site is fully translated in French? Maybe @siemsie can help?

in general, if this is not a technical problem nor a problem with the translation force ressource, then we have an orginasional problem…. Because we have so many problems with the localisation of pages. I would really like to have a talk about that topic.

After discussing with @martin8032 and @Popolechien the main sources of the problem seems to be:

  • Weakness in the localisation software which lead to situation where without user manual action, translators are not pinged. Here there is no real solution in view, I can think about:
    • admin has a weekly routine to secure translators are pinged
    • each time someone changing a content should ping the translators
  • Translators don't always do the translation work (at the end they are volunteers)
  • We probably have too few translators

To address the technical issue: We could try a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/notification/ to send out notifications automatically to all translators whenever a post/page is created or updated.
