Requirements & Installation: see the INSTALL file.
The LAO contains the following sub-packages: RE2C, CDT, TSL ECL, PRO.
RE2C is a snapshot of the corresponding open-source projects, it is included in
order to have a compatible build and cross-build system with the rest of the
LAO and the Open64.
The lao/LAO/CDT (Compiler Development Tools) package provides the basic utilities:
[lao/LAO/CDT/BSL] (Basic Services Library)
Memory allocator, some XML stuff, emulation of 128-bit integers, emulation of
32-bit and 64-bit IEEE floating-point for integer processors.
[lao/LAO/CDT/CCL] (Container CLasses ???)
Zoo of containers, plus the base class Indexed with an immutable IDENTITY field
and a user-defined INDEX field
[lao/LAO/CDT/CAL] (Combinatorial Algorithm Library)
Most interesting are the Network module, that implements primal and dual network simplex for
solving network flow algorithms, and the LProgram module, a linear programming wrapper that
abstracts the differences between CPLEX and GLPK.
The lao/LAO/TSL (Target Specific Libraries) package contains the machine description and low-level
code for ISS and JIT compiler (not included).
[lao/LAO/TSL/MDT] Make available the results of the MDS as static tables and wrapper functions.
[lao/LAO/TSL/AIR] Low-level representation for use by the ISS and JIT compiler, includes in
particular the Scoreboard basic block scheduler and the InterBlock postpass scheduler.
The lao/LAO/ECL (Embedded Compiler Libraries) package contains the LAO intermediate representation,
control-flow and data-flow analyzes, and a few optimizations. Most notably the SSA-based register
allocation from Fabrice Rastello team at INRIA is missing:
[lao/LAO/ECL/LIR] LAO intermediate representation, includes (SSA) Variable as first-class citizen.
[lao/LAO/ECL/PFA] control-flow analyzes, includes in particular the LoopForest of Ramalingam for
recovering the loop nesting structure, and also SSA coalescing and out-of-SSA techniques including
Sreedhar III (SAS'99), Boissinot (CGO'09 best paper), Decoalescer (generalization of Budimlic
PLDI'02). Fast liveness check and set computation on the SSA form (CGO'08 best paper) are also
included.
[lao/LAO/ECL/CGO] code generator optimizations, missing the SSA register allocation of INRIA.
The lao/LAO/PRO package contains legacy superblock scheduling and software pipelining code that is
used in the ST and Kalray production compilers, which are based on the Open64.
[lao/LAO/PRO/XFA] support for instruction scheduling, in particular dependence graphs and
superblock regions.
[lao/LAO/PRO/SCD] The Relaxation module implements scheduling relaxation of Leung Palem Pnueli
TOPLAS 2002. The Scheduler module is the instruction scheduler base class. The Insertion module
implements register lifetime-sensitive software pipelining. The Formulation module implements
optimal integer programming formulation for modulo scheduling. The Construction module implements
software pipeline construction after modulo scheduling. The Iterative module is internship code.
[lao/LAO/PRO/O64] Interface between the LAO and the Open64 CGIR.
A typical build of the LAO for the kvx family is as follows:

FAMILY=kvx make -C../LAO debug
The self checks display a dump of the MDS tables, for instance:
make -C ECL check # from lao/debug-kvx directory
Then find the *.1 files in the ECL/MDT directory.
More extensive tests are available as:
make traces # from lao/debug-kvx directory
This will build a bunch of LAO traces, based on the LAO_INPUT/kvx files which are snapshots of the
function calls between the Open64 CG and the LAO.
