Currently we substract the images and subsequently turn them to greyscale to get a single mask for the explicit encoding of differences.
An alternative would be to subtract the color channels individually and then use the maximum difference for the explicit encoding. Then you can eliminate the edge case where different colors are represented as the same shade of grey.
