There seem to be a power surge when the system is powered off using the e-stop. This doesn't happen with a proper software shutdown. More testing is needed to confirm this and get a better sense of the "jolt" amplitude and duration. Also, we should test other failure cases, i.e. e-stop, watchdog (just unplug firewire cable).
One partial fix might be to trigger a software power-off when the safety relays are open. A firmware fix might be needed if this isn't fast enough.
