Correct way to extending

Hello.
What is the correct way to extending/creating custom menus so it will be manageable?
I wanted to add tmux-logging support (it is not an often action) and the only idea I had is having my own fork.
It's not a big deal, but maybe there are better options that I'm missing?
Probably, if #48 will be resolved - this will also resolved, but #48 a lot more complicated.
