is there a requirement for mysql?

Could it be done purely in postgres?

There certainly could be a postgres version of wait-for-mysql.sh

The mysql dependency is for the mysqladmin command to determine if the server is alive prior to running the sphinx indexer.

It is also nice to have the mysql command line client available in the container for debugging.
