or maybe just get used to as.vector(t(x))

m <- matrix(1:12, ncol = 3L, byrow = TRUE)
as.vector(m)
#>  [1]  1  4  7 10  2  5  8 11  3  6  9 12

as.vector(t(m))
#>  [1]  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9 10 11 12
