understand obligations re: policing illegality #122
Comments
cf. #121 for the specific case of 8chan |
I'd say that it is not uncommon when authorities use too much of their power to pursue their own interests or interests of their beneficiaries - that's why sites like https://www.chillingeffects.org/ exist and why all requests should go through them. |
I called the FBI. Cross-posting from #121 (comment):
I think that's a good enough answer for now. If this comes up again when we're bigger we'll revisit then. |
Reopening because we've decided to hire a lawyer to pursue this question further. |

I don't think Gratipay should be a policeman of the Internet. If people feel that somebody is receiving money for illegal activities, they should escalate the problem with authorities, who should investigate and issue a ban order. If we will be banning users just because other users complain about their offsite behavior, we will lose our auditory. Open culture, unfortunately, means that conflicts of opinions are inevitable, and you don't want to be the weapon in those dirty wars. |
@techtonik The question here is what our legal obligations are, not what our preferences are. |
We have a lawyer now (#193), but no money. Let's revisit this when we have money to have our lawyer advise us on this. |
Closing as moot in light of the team review in Gratipay 2.0. |
