I'd like to get a user feedback survey distributed to as many active recipients and contributors as we can.

There's not a lot of research I've seen compiled to help inform future marketing campaigns and content production, so a simple lightweight survey seems like a good way to start that process.

I've put together a draft here: https://ethangj.wufoo.com/forms/gittip-user-feedback-survey/

I'm wondering what else everyone would like to see on this, and how we would best go about distributing it.

Quick note: the correct capitalization is Gittip, not GitTip. In general this sounds like something we should do.

Oops, corrected.

Cool. Still spelled "GitTip" on Thank You page.

Plans to publish the results?

@dsernst Haven't gotten that far yet. Revising the survey in IRC.

I'll be out all week mostly without technology, feel free to begin distribution Monday @whit537 -

All modifications made based on our conversations Friday,

As far as results, I will export all and post here once I'm back with a computer. Any changes we want to make before distribution I can make today or in a week when I return.

@ethangj Okay, thanks for the heads up. I was thinking (but didn't mention it in IRC the other day) that we should run this under a Gittip account instead of your personal Wufoo so we're on http://gittip.wufoo.com/. Better for trustworthiness, no? I made a Wufoo account for Gittip and I can look at running it through there. Happy to share the password with you when we connect again. Does that sound okay?

That is a good idea, if I can get access to the account I'll rebuild the survey over there. @whit537

What's your personal email? I'll mail you the password.

Cool, thanks. I just tried giving you the password using LastPass's "share" feature. Let me know if that fails. :-)

Had more thoughts on this, including a different way to approach — one
focused question at a time — & a few more relevant questions. Notes here:

Also not sure if this is welcome now but http://www.typeform.com/ is my
go-to form builder: really beautiful surveying, easy to use, responsive
across devices.

Do we want to pause until I return after next week to consider the feedback @dsernst @whit537 - a lot of this makes sense, have some questions though - or release this one as is on the Gittip account and build towards a second, better survey to follow?

Also how do we initiate the process for opt-in email list on the homepage and as part of account signup?

@whit537 Got the password but doesn't seem to be working, copying and pasting from LastPass.

I think we should proceed with this as we have it just to get our feet wet. Typeform looks great and I like the planning for regular, ongoing customer surveying/interaction. Since that plan depends on user emails I think we shouldn't block on that. Let's get something out there and then we have a baseline to compare to. Eh?

@ethangj Try the password again? I think I fixed a configuration problem.

Got it - form built out here: https://gittip.wufoo.com/forms/gittip-user-feedback-survey/

Awesome! Thanks @ethangj @dsernst. I'll launch this on Monday afternoon via Twitter. We decided not to send this out via email since we don't have opt-in, correct?

Correct. But let me know how we can kick off resolving that issue going forward.

Related: ATUnit recently pushed a user feedback survey: https://atunitcat.wufoo.com/forms/funding-needs-survey

I don't know if they'll be posting the results publicly.

@ethangj Advocate for #2312 and then we can talk about the UI needs around opt-in.

Very small result. Can we continue to push and perhaps have some of the leadership directly outreach to further encourage responses?

@ethangj Yeah, I dunno. If people aren't jumping to respond then I'm inclined to take it as a sign that we're not interesting. What do we achieve by pushing on people who apparently aren't interested in us right now? :-(

Maybe refocus on three priorities:

  • Weekly social calls ton sign up for the email list (Opt in, link to mailchimp)
  • Fast track homepage email signup inclusion
  • Fast track email opt in as part of onboarding

?

Here's the data using GitHub's CSV browser:

https://github.com/gittip/research/blob/93b63466ebaebe9817e750c8be0cbc98dd32e270/Gittip%20User%20Feedback%20Survey.csv

I've tweeted about it, pointing back here for discussion.

There were IP addresses in that file, and there's no need to have a separate repo. I removed the IPs, and moved it to building.gittip

@oakes and @seanlinsley point out that we should advertise this kind of thing on the website in the future.

What's the process for that @whit537?

Also how do I go about opening a discussion on a weekly "Sign Up For The Email List" campaign as well as including an opt in list on the site?

@chadwhitacre
Contributor

@ethangj No good process right now. Would take some coding to do.

If we don't already have tickets for a "sign up for the email list" campaign and opt in lists then go ahead and start them.

@ethangj What can we do with the data we do have? What did we learn?

@ethangj

ethangj commented Aug 19, 2014

I would say the primary thing we learned with so little data is that we need better mechanisms in place to capture data. :)
