This idea grew out of a conversation about user advocates over on BG. Rather than making "user advocate" a special role, we decided in IRC to add a listing of Gittip staff to community pages and then train all Gittip staff on proper handling of user feedback (consent! + education re: open source). The listing on the community pages will say something like, “Here are Gittip Staff members from this community. If you have feedback on or problems with Gittip please get in touch!”

@greggles IRC:

BUT I worry about the fame effect - people who are a UA shouldn't get more gittips for their work as a UA

A few minutes ago I just privately asked a few people for their thoughts on the new UA approach (#2452), to make sure they feel we're still going in the right direction -- I feel we are, but I'd like to get feedback from the people involved in the initial discussions, to be sure.

@whit537 the unanimous response when I asked people privately seems to be that we want both actual UAs as well as having everyone trained for getting feedback and the like. And really, I think that makes sense: part of a UAs job is community outreach, and asking everybody to do that would be silly at best.

Okay, can you unpack that for me? What does community outreach look like?

In particular, how does "community outreach" differ from sales on the one hand and from customer support on the other?
