Okay, slam shift! 🚗

In "Relentless Refinement" I proposed that we use /for/ pages to align our efforts. Now after spending time with /for/receiving-money/ (#1234) and thinking about a new homepage (#1074) I think we can boil down the list of non-community /for/ pages from #949 (comment) into two use cases: giving and receiving. I propose that we use /about/ to talk about this instead of /for/, for these reasons:

  • If we can categorize everything under giving and receiving, we only need two of these, not N of these.
  • It's non-standard to locate answers to questions about using the site anywhere besides /about/—don't make me think!
  • Using /about/ reduces confusion about what the /for/ namespace is for (yes, some of you told me so).
  • /for/contributors/ confuses people because they think it's addressed to people wanting to contribute money via Gittip, not contributing work on Gittip (rename "For Contributors" #1285).

Here's specifically what I'm proposing:

  • move /for/contributors/ to /about/helping/ (probably with a redirect)
  • organize all of the use cases on revamp about pages #949 (comment) under /about/giving-money/ and /about/receiving-money/

Here's the IA I'd envision:

  /%username/ <- accounts on Gittip
  /on/ <- accounts elsewhere
  /for/ <- communities on Gittip

About pages:
  /about/

... to address use cases:
  /about/giving-money/
  /about/giving-money/individuals.html
  /about/giving-money/companies.html
  /about/giving-money/foundations.html
  /about/receiving-money/
  /about/receiving-money/companies.html
  /about/receiving-money/charities.html
  /about/receiving-money/open-source-projects.html
  /about/receiving-money/youtubers.html

... to explain Gittip features:
  /about/teams/
  /about/communities/

Blech. This is messy because we don't have a good navigation system in place. This might have to wait until we redo more of the UI, starting with ... #1074?

+1 from @mvdkleijn over on #1281.

@whit537 I'm having trouble seeing the bigger picture here, so I don't have any feedback for you on this. I get the feeling that you're trying to improve structure and organization though, so +1 on that. I'm all for improving IA, but not at the risk of bikeshedding ;)

Do we want this user visible change in the Infrastructure milestone? (change of /for/ and /about/)

I don't think this should be classed as infrastructure @zwn - I also think this is not about "Developer Documentation" as the label suggests?

Fair enough.

+1 /about/

Also shouldn't the mission statement go under /about/ ? <3 #1227

For example I was looking through the site for the Mission Statement and I couldn't find it just digging around. Naturally I went here first.

Also also would making a /contribute/ link work instead of /for/contributors ? :D:D:D

Done. /for/contributors/* redirects to http://building.gittip.com/ as of b55022c.
