Apple officially announced Software Based Authentication for HomeKit Accessories during its public 2017 World-wide Developers Conference (WWDC).
Accessory manufacturers no longer need to integrate the Apple Authentication Coprocessor. Software Based Authentication will enable manufacturers to bring HomeKit to devices which are already in the field, by means of a firmware update.
