As we know that the the current sync method relies on firefox sync, and it has new limits: https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2020/07/09/changes-to-storage-sync-in-firefox-79/

Due to that, could we have an alternative sync method, something like owncloud or ftp preferably, but something like google using firebase data should also be okay.

Are there any plans towards this, or are there any concerns on this?

These are good ideas, and I would support pull requests that implement them. Right now, your options are to periodically export/import settings to your own backend storage. I know that's not what you are asking for.

Thanks. I'm glad to hear there are no real concerns on this and the idea is welcome.
I might give a try on creating a pull request, but it might take a while since I have no real experience in this.

Additional sync options can be looked at for v8.0.

Sync sites must:

  • Have API to send/receive data and logins
  • Easily (free) available
