Due to that, could we have an alternative sync method, something like owncloud or ftp preferably, but something like google using firebase data should also be okay.
Are there any plans towards this, or are there any concerns on this?

These are good ideas, and I would support pull requests that implement them. Right now, your options are to periodically export/import settings to your own backend storage. I know that's not what you are asking for.

I might give a try on creating a pull request, but it might take a while since I have no real experience in this.
