Currently the background color is set to "#2A2A2E" which matches the background color that Thunderbird uses in the Compose window.
But there should be an option in the Options page to change it.
Note that it will work only on emails that don't use custom background colors, those are inverted by the filter (usually to something like pitch black) and I was unable to change it...
