Allow both reduced output for automated use, and increased output for debugging/tracing via a -v LEVEL type option.
-v LEVEL
Can also be made to accommodate #208, by providing ways for output to be redirected into callbacks rather than always sent via print().

Version 2.2 now has --trace, which may be sufficient for these use cases.
