Skin tones appear red in SDR>HDR conversion, and there's more grain #34
Comments
RTX HDR does apply a small saturation boost which might be what you noticed, you can usually remove that with TrueHDRTweaks at https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/781 (the default INI there tries to remove it), that'll only work on video players though and not the in-browser HDR. |
Hey yeah I know about the boost but I thiught it was only for your game version from Nexus, thanks for both btw! Where would I put the files now to fix the saturation for the movies? I'm using MCP-HC, should the files go to its folder or the mpc video renderer install folder? Does it also need any further changes to be "aware" of the ini files? |
Putting all the files from x64 folder next to the MPC-HC64.exe should work, should be able to edit the INI fine, there might not be a log file created when MPC isn't running as admin though, but it should still be active (to make sure you could test setting Saturation = 0.1 and see if videos become grayscale) |
Thanks that did work! Is paper value the thing to adjust to tone down the brightness of non-highlights in the scene that shouldn't be as bright? For example shirts and sheets etc, can get very bright like they're emitting light which shouldn't be the case, but not sure if any value can correct that or is it just how it is with an SDR > HDR conversion. |
I've seen this in shows like True Detective and Boardwalk Empire when using this HDR conversion, but I'm not sure if it's down to the MPC renderer or Nvidia's HDR conversion itself.
Skin tones seem more red in HDR, whereas there is no red tinge in SDR. It's subtle but it's there, seems to ruin color accuracy somewhat. There is also noticeably more film grain in the sky/brighter areas of the screen that don't have much detail.
I was using madvr prior to this so not sure if I should set any specific settings for the renderer. The display is LG C1.
