Changing @tmux-gruvbox-right-status-z doesn't seem to do anything?

I might have done something stupid, or didn't do something trivial.

But, I have in my tmux.conf:

set -g base-index 1

set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tpm'
set -g @plugin 'tmux-plugins/tmux-sensible'

set -g @plugin 'egel/tmux-gruvbox'
set -g @tmux-gruvbox 'dark256' # or 'dark', 'light', 'light256'
set -g @tmux-gruvbox-right-status-z '#h #{tmux_mode_indicator}'

run '~/.config/tmux/plugins/tpm/tpm'

And I don't see the mode indicator. Tried also to set status-z to '#h ZZZ' to test, and also no changes. What am I missing?

So, re-checked, and making it static '%h ZZZ' works. So what is it about mode indicator?
