In the following section we will outline fundamental rules for naming conventions for uProtocol things like uDomains, uDevices, and uEs, these names are used to address the uThings by distributed apps and services.

All uEs MUST have a name

MUST be unique across feature/function

MUST uniquely define a feature(-set), independently of its deployment (where a specific instance is running)

MUST be made up of unreserved characters per RFC3986 Appendix A:

A device is a logical independent representation of a service bus in different execution environments. Below are some general requirements for deciding when an execution environment should or should not be considered a separate device:

MUST be assigned a static fixed hostname that represents the name of the module.

SHOULD be bound by memory space. If two domains (ADAS and infotainment) share the same memory space, then they MAY be the same device. Device is loosely bound by the operating system boundary but depends on the implementer’s discretion.

Different hardware modules connected over a network interface MUST be separate devices. Some examples are vehicle ECUs.
uProtocol will follow Domain Name System (DNS) specifications such as RFC1034, RFC1035, RFC1123, RFC8117, and other RFCs, for naming and organizing devices into domains (a.k.a grouping of devices). A domain name is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control within the Internet.
