Today, the RegistrationService was archived.
When we started implementing the RegistrationService, we never intended to provide a component that would be used in production environments. Since there were not many dataspaces available in the wild at the time, we developed the Minimum Viable Dataspace (MVD) to demonstrate how dataspace technologies, and the EDC in particular, could be used. To run the MVD, an exemplary service for registering participants was required, and so we created it to use in our demo.
In the meantime, we have seen different dataspaces and all have their own ways of managing participant onboarding and discovery. The EDC cannot make assumptions here and will not advocate a certain way of handling it. Strategically, we are actively involved in the solution-independent specification of the Decentralized Claim Protocol (DCP). When a DCP compliant solution is implemented, which depends on various factors, we will also update the MVD accordingly.
As a next step the RS codebase will likely be integrated into the MVD itself. This means that (for the time being) nothing will change and the RS can still be used for demonstration or playing around. But, ultimately the RS will get replaced by a proper, DCP compliant issuer component.
You can get updates of the progress of DCP as well as other related specs on the website of the Eclipse Dataspace Working Group
Stay tuned!
