for example this function would be applied both of these cases:

@graphcore.rule('*.trace_1s', '*.edges')
def edges(trace_1s):
    pass

query = [{
    'meter.trace_1s': ...,
    'meter.edges?': None,
}]

query = [{
    'appliance.trace_1s': ...
    'appliance.edges?': None,
}]
