Support for larger circles

Yesterday's NYT crossword implemented larger circles that span 2x2 squares:

You can see some comments here about how they had to update their iOS app to support the larger circles, so some people were complaining about not seeing them because they hadn't gotten the update yet.

I don't know if larger circles are going to become a thing, but maybe something for downforacross to think about if they do? Without them, the starred entries in the puzzle didn't make any sense.
