The collections document supports document level metadata for both documents and collections.

But what about metadata contained in elements and attributes of XML documents? Can it be searched using keyword/pair combinations in the same way? The current design does not support this, but it could easily be added.

Comment from @PonteIneptique :

It should be the role of the implementer to translate their metadata to the metadata scheme. If they have advanced encoding of their text which supports such metadata (like TEI), it is up to them to translate these metadata into a DTS Collection scheme.

I think we should focus on what HydraCollection can support, but not further.

I also think we should be careful on terminology, like in your first sentence (there is 3 times the word document in three different meaning):

  • collections are a set of metadata, potentially in a hierarchy, and can be a meta-representation of a document.
  • a document is a textual node that can possess subnodes. It is described by a collection and a set of references
  • a reference is the identifier of a subnode of a document. It allows for access of a chunk of a document

If we can agree with this terminology and stick to it, it will make things simpler :)
