ZipCPU: Can you take a look with a critical eye at these two PDFs. and give a fair opinion.

<develonepi3> Not time but my money. Lost a lot time with CATBoard since, this was one of kind that Dave just drift into the realm of unsupported hardware.
<ZipCPU> If you are trying to compare/contrast which is better, an RPi or an FPGA, my answer would be: it depends. It depends upon what you are trying to do.
<ZipCPU> Are you trying to become a good FGPA designer? That's one goal. Are you trying to accomplish a particular problem, such as JPEG2K or encryption/decryption? That would be another goal
<ZipCPU> If your goal was JPEG2K, the CATBoard ... wasn't really ready for the task. It couldn't support the I/O bandwidth you needed in order to beat the RPI
<develonepi3> My Goal was at one point data compression with jpeg 2000 and KLT or SVD for numerical data. This was running on a PC many years ago.
<ZipCPU> You managed to get that running on an RPI quite nicely, right?
<develonepi3> Only as 2 not integrated code. Not like I had with Java. I only have the a demo software. The Java and C JPEG are very different. Java appears seem to be loosing support. Bare Metal RPi is in Pascal with C routines.
<ZipCPU> So is your goal then to still do JPEG2K?
If I had a customer other than myself.
<ZipCPU> So, is your goal instead to learn about the tools well enough to be prepared then for having such a customer?
<ZipCPU> I ask because you have the two options in front of you--if your goal is to learn about the tools, you might be able to select between the two
<ZipCPU> Which tool set do you want to learn? There's a lot you could do going bare metal with the RPi. There's no reason why you need to stick with either Java or Pascal
<ZipCPU> There's also a lot you could do with Xilinx boards, such as the Arty
<ZipCPU> I think in general the JPEG2K problem will remain limited by memory bandwidth
<ZipCPU> I know the ZipCPU didn't use it's memory bandwidth very well on the Arty--it could do a lot better. The RPi did a much nicer job with its memory bandwidth, but not nearly as nice when also running Linux (if I recall correctly)
<ZipCPU> I have an upgrade to the ZipCPU that would do a better job with its memory bandwidth, but its currently an (unfunded) work in progress.
<ZipCPU> Xilinx has also tried to play into this space by creating Zynq designs. Imagine a Zynq to be like an RPi, but with the FPGA logic hanging right off of the core bus. You could easily get the best of both works.
<ZipCPU> That said, I'm not sure I'd recommend it to you at all.
<ZipCPU> Zynq's are ... more challenging to work with, and most of Xilinx's demos are broken in one way or another
