<li>The fire department in the city of Atlanta is known as Atlanta Fire Rescue (AFR).</li>
<li>AFR covers 132 square miles within the city limits of Atlanta, and the department helps neighbouring cities and counties upon request.</li>

<li>AFR was created in 1848 when the Atlanta City Council formed a committee to investigate a fire problem in the city. </li>
<li>The first fire station in the city, Atlanta Fire Company No. 1, went into service in 1851. </li>
<li>Until 1882, the department was made up of volunteers; firefighting was not a paid career. </li>

<li>Make sure your home has a working smoke detector in every level.</li>
<li>Make sure there is at least one fire extinguisher in your house.</li>
<li>You should have a fire drill in your house. Make sure your family has a planned escape route and a specific place you can meet outside in case there is a fire.</li>

<li>The graph to the right shows the average fire truck response time, or how quickly it took for the fire department to respond to a call.</li>
<li>Click on a button to see the data for a different month.</li>
<li>If the graph is red it means the response time was too slow, so it would take longer to respond to a rescue service or put out a fire. Yellow means it was close to the target time. Green means the response was quick.</li>
<li>The graphs below show the percentage of fire incidents that where handled with ways that met today's standards and fire events.</li>
