Pit kilns, in all states, show that the proper tool to break it are axes, which doesn't make sense when clearing the burnt out pit kiln (which looks like an ash pile). A shovel would make more sense, since ash blocks made by pit and refractory burning are also cleared with shovels.

Proper tool (as shown by The One Probe) is an axe, and not a shovel.
