Can you hide a label from a formatter function?

I have a line chart which I use the formatter to bring in a custom label.
I have display as 'auto', but sometimes I just don't want the label to show if say the label before it is the same. Is there a way to hide a label programmatically? I can't access the values in Display, so I assume I have to do this in Formatter.
