They smashed up faculty governance. The faculty made caustic remarks on social media and wrote some pieces, but didn't organize. They privatized campuses, precaritized teaching, and sacked staff, the faculty groaned, rolled their eyes at the "rightwing," but didn't organize. They flooded campus with defense contracts, here the faculty signed on, a little eye roll maybe but hey that paid the bills, and made a nice line on the cv. Then they cut research budgets-- now the faculty hissed angrily and tried to organize, but the structures of repression were well embedded by then and their hissing was futile.
