Applying default subscription to all users - existing and new.

What is the proper way of assigning default subscription to existing and new users?

      $user = Auth::user();
      $user_subscription = $user->subscription();

      if (!$user_subscription) {
         $plan = Plan::getByTag('free');
               // Create the subscription
        $subscription = $user->newSubscription(
            'main',
            $plan,
            'Main subscription',
            'Customer main subscription'
        )->create();

      }

Should i use it like so and paste this in my user model or something ? maybe in constructor.
