Because of an upstream issue (stan-dev/cmdstanpy#766), predict won't really work for some versions of cmstan and cmdstanpy.

Solution

Either

  • pin version of cmdstanpy to one that works with current cmdstan target version; or
  • update the minimum required version for cmdstanpy and cmdstan. I'd vouch for pinning cmdstanpy anyways to avoid these issues creeping out in the future.

It seems like updating to the latest cmdstan* works for predict but breaks sample. There seems to be a bug in cmdstanpy where, for some state, it never sets adapt_delta to True.
