Proposal for community building/scaling goals for 2022

I'd like to propose things I think we should focus on in 2022 to continue building and expand at a larger scale the AsyncAPI community. Prior to joining Linux Foundation and no clear governance model I was just pushing stuff on my own under AsyncAPI umbrella. In 2021 when we were setting up the TSC and we did not have yet a framework for making decisions I was still self-claimed lead here pushing things forward, again under AsyncAPI umbrella.

Now, we are in LF, we have a pretty solid open governance model, many TSC members. So I think that before I kick off more things in 2021 under AsyncAPI umbrella, we should have support and agreement from TSC side.

There are 3 big topics for 2022 that should be priority 1 from my point of view:

1. AsyncAPI Conference (remote and in-person). The conference last year and this year proved to be a great way to gather community and demonstrate the project's openness. We should continue, but I think in closer cooperation with Linux Foundation (for event discoverability and exposure to the entire LF community) and partners/sponsors (more costs to cover, higher presence of sponsors).
2. Participate in Google Summer of Code and as many other initiatives as possible. For example, now that we have at least one person that demonstrates 100% support for docs (@alequetzalli) we should participate in Google Season of Docs. Another example: because this discussion caused a lot of interest, we should engage with Outreachy Internships. It is all about demonstrating the type of community we are building here, but we also need to remember how many great people joined TSC through GSoC. This will require mentorship availability of TSC members.
3. AsyncAPI Ambasador program. This community is growing very fast and we need to empower more active community members to scale the growth even more and be the first point of contact to assure we are still responsive and welcoming. I don't have a clear vision, even the name is a subject for change. I just know that we can scale faster if we go out of slack and twitter to other channels. I know we have folks preaching about AsyncAPI in their universities, I know there are people preaching about AsyncAPI to their customers. We just need to build a network of folks, share resources, come up with some meetups setup, and make the community even more accessible. In exchange, we can offer swag packs that "ambassadors" can take to events and share with others, free conference tickets, and some other useful needed things.

This requires lots of work and lots of commitment from others, but the cool thing about ☝🏼 is that all of the above is not even started yet, so there is a lot of work in open-source for people that do not necessarily want to just to push code.

I'm very curious about what others think. I'd like to discuss it a bit until the end of the year and give it under TSC voting to decide if all ☝🏼 can be done under the AsyncAPI brand. Of course, would be awesome to see some volunteers there

yeah you know me, I'm always available for such initiatives so this is why I propose that one of 3 goals is exactly participation in such initiatives.

There are just plenty, and I think some because of their schedule will "overlap" so somebody need to find time to kinda put all those different initiatives on a kind of "calendar" to see that for example June-July-August is reserved for GSoC and doing something more is way too much, then December-March is probably Outreachy Internship. Then I see https://externship.github.in/ is also during winter but might be that we get so many mentors from TSC and ideas that might be we can apply for 2 different events at the same time.

There are plenty of those 😅 I've heard about https://fellowship.mlh.io/ a lot of positive things, some say it is even better than GSoC 🤷🏼

MLH fellowships are definitely better than gsoc in some ways. I feel that myself being MLH fellow twice.
But gsoc is also good. Both has different aspects

Please:

• ask any questions if something is not clear
• propose alternatives if you think there are more important goals
• write in comment in what initiative you'd like to participate/help, just be more active

Would be great to get your input latest mid-January, especially if you disagree with one of the goals, so we can discuss it closely and not delay any works (especially that conference-related work needs to start as soon as possible)

For the 2nd point about initiatives, I think stuff like Cloud Native Hackathon is great, and AsyncAPI could perhaps be a sponsor, encouraging people to learn and contribute to the community.

Also one last thing, one other goal could be to improve docs or articles, presentations and make a first version of a Use Cases page:

The coming soon could be 2022 😄, it could simply start with use cases the community knows about. There is a discussion about this, so I'm just mentioning since it came up in my head 😅

I'm not sure if this should be an area of focus, so please do share your opinion on this topic, I'd love to hear it 😃

sounds good, we just need someone who can drive it end 2 end from our side.

This is still on the agenda, but I just do not consider it as a "strictly" community-building effort. It is more related to education. Although I know the border is pretty thin here. The good news though is that I already have a first company that wants to officially publish their use case. I hope to finalize all by end of January 🤞🏼 And once we have the first one, then push this as a group will be much simpler.

So yeah, to summarize the idea behind 3 goals mentioned above -> they are more focused on scaling the existing community:

• conference -> get us together and closer to strengthen the community even more
• google summer of code and others -> to bring more contributors, show we are an open community, and as a result, also get potential TSC members that do not represent any specific company, but are individual contributors
• ambasador-like program -> to establish a strong group of folks that feel a connection with the community and on their own, they represent the AsyncAPI Initiative just because they feel a part of the community and go and talk about it at different events,

@derberg I think these are good... I'm wondering whether we should have something around the 3.0.0 release. I'm not sure exactly what I mean by this, but I feel like we could/should be doing more to progress/support the 3.0 work... maybe through discussions, blog posts, meetings, something?

• Hacktoberfest

there is place for more as long as they do not have timing conflict with other initiatives
