AboutCode is a simple idea to keep software provenance data close to the code.
The AboutCode Toolkit and ABOUT files provide a simple way to document the provenance (origin and license) and other important or interesting information about third-party software components that you use in your project.
The tools are command line based utilities written in Python, released under Apache 2.0.
As you can see in the table of contents on the right, we've provided a series of How To pages that cover the steps involved in generating attribution and license reference files. If you're new to the process, we suggest you start with How To: Attribution and License Reference Prerequisites.
