Memory Swap 90%+

Hi
Im running a pi4 with 2Gb memory and after a restart the memory swap is over 90% and only another restart will remove it.

If I don't restart then it will finally crash.

Is there anything I can change to stop this??

I'm running an asi120. I halved the time-lapse image size but I'll try the options in the link and let you know

You should not have any issues with memory usage due to image size with the ASI120 since the image size is fairly small. The swappiness setting should give a large benefit since it should not swap nearly as much. The default swappiness setting causes the linux kernel to swap when it does not necessarily need to, the setting gives preference to having memory free rather than just using it.

Does your system actually crash or are you just trying to ensure that it does not crash?

I've thought nothing of it when it's said over 95% before thinking it would sort itself out but after maybe another 2 days it stopped responding, either on the local website or SSL.
I am currently on 1 day 17 hours, and swap is at 7%. Last time I restarted it was showing 6% after a day or two but then the next time I looked it was at 99%.
That was when I started looking on here and raised this chat.

Following this too as this happens with my setup also. I typically just reboot when swap gets to 90% after a few days.

So, just i've gone back into Indi allsky and the swap is at 97%. time is 3 days 37 mins.

so something has run in the last 4 hours and not cleared the swap?

Everything looks normal there. I do not think indi-allsky is the cause of the memory utilization.

Can you provide the output of ps auxwww

Do you use the desktop GUI of your indi-allsky system? If not, you can save a lot of memory by disabling the desktop components.

That looks like it. 1 day in and nothing in the swap.

If I'd left the gui on but just ran it when needed. Would that have worked too.

If you logged out, it would probably help prevent the excessive memory usage.

You may re-enable the GUI with the following

Came here to ask about the same issue - for me it's since the panorama (which I love!!) was added.

Mine runs for ~3-7 days before the swap just becomes too excessive and things start to fail (e.g. videos fail to generate).

Pi 4B 8GB here with the IMX 378 (higher resolution).

I was wondering whether at the start of the end of night routines (i.e. before video generation) there would be a means to clear down the swap each day - or a periodic script that could run to tidy things up?

I am setting this up on a Pi 4 2GB and found it very unstable when installing on top of Bookworm, but I've found a couple of system tweaks makes it quite usable.

• PiOS Bookworm seems to set a 100MB swap file by default. This is far too small for indi-allsky (or anything?) and is the main culprit for indi-allsky falling over. Change it to 2GB or 4GB.
• Install a 100-200MB compressed zram-swap partition. This will prevent caching to the SD card for most activities except for generating videos. https://github.com/foundObjects/zram-swap.
• Set journald to volatile logging, as mentioned in the disk optimisation docs. I leave the things like swappiness alone as zram does a better job at reducing writes to the SD card.
