WordCamp EU 2018: Contributor Day

This is the place where I want to keep all details related to the upcoming Contributor Day and work planned for

Core: Editor (Gutenberg)

This is a sub-core team who are working on the Gutenberg editor, writing code, fixing bugs and general development of Gutenberg.

Contributor Day schedule

08:30 – Registration
09:15 – Opening remarks
10:00 – Contribute to WordPress & set up your local environment workshop
12:30 – Lunch
14:30 – Contribute to WordPress
16:00 – Online bug scrub session (lead by @designsimply)
17:00 – Closing remarks

You will need your laptop and charger throughout the day, as well as, loads of energy to enjoy the day. Lunch will be provided.

First time contributors 🥇

1. Read first Contributing docs or jump to one of the sections:
   • Getting Started with Local Environment
   • How Designers Can Contribute
   • Contribute to the Documentation
2. Explore the repository using Good First Issue label.

Ideas for discussion

• Very high barrier of entry for developers.
• Block API: Server-side awareness of block types.
• Native Gutenberg Extensibility Overview.
• Integration with Visual Builders.
• Full REST API support in addition to reads using wp.data, deprecating withAPIData.

Tasks to work on

1. Review and merge as many open PRs as possible. Close those which got stale.
2. Fix some issues labelled with Type Bug.
3. Work on one of the following tasks:
   • Blocks: Bring transforms into block library.
   • Blocks: Create unified UI for block variants.
   • TinyMCE Custom Buttons and Extensibility (Rich text formatting filter #6642).

The accessibility team plans to organise pair programming for Gutenberg on the WordCamp Europe contributor day, pairing up accessibility experts and Gutenberg developers.
