\section{Introduction}\label{sec:introduction}
\IEEEPARstart{I}{ndividuals} who work and live in a smart city \cite{smartcity} are enjoying services provided by different entities, e.g., electric power, heat energy and water resource from respective companies.
Conventionally, these are considered to be different systems and have been operated independently.
However, up-to-date ideas concerning environmental pollution mitigation, higher efficiency of energy utilization and flexibility of power delivery have contributed to the concept of multienergy networks.
Due to the coupling across different energy sectors, the overall energy efficiency is improved and various forms of renewable energy could be accommodated to a greater extend \cite{prodIErev}.
Moreover, the resilience of multicarrier system under extreme events is improved \cite{E1}.
From the perspective of socioeconomic, it is advantageous to consider the coordination between power and water networks \cite{E8_OWPF}.

\section{Models}
\subsection{CHP Units}
The operating region of a CHP unit is typically modeled as a polyhedron \cite{chp2015}.
Four extreme points A,B,C,D are considered here, with edge AB denoting the maximum limit of power output (\ref{chpab}), CD the minimum limit of steam injection (\ref{chpcd}) and BC the maximum limit of fuel injection (\ref{chpbc}).
The P-Q output is restricted by the apparent power, often linearized by a hexagon \cite{E1}.
Negative outputs are not considered, thus these constraints are further reduced to (\ref{hex1}) and (\ref{hex2}).
Active and heat power output are bounded as shown in (\ref{pbnd}) and (\ref{hbnd}).
Unit start-up and shut-down costs are expressed as (\ref{chpst}) and (\ref{chpsh}).
Note that when $t=1$, i.e., the 1st decision stage, $\mu^{CHP}_{t-1,u}$ is an initial state rather than a decision variable.
Also note that it is alright to use '$\ge$' rather than '$=$' in (\ref{chpst}) and (\ref{chpsh}) since $C^{CHP,st}_{t,u}$ and $C^{CHP,sh}_{t,u}$ are minimized directly, thus these constraints could be reduced to simple linear constraints.
The fuel consumption is proportional to the active and heat power output of the CHP unit (\ref{fuel}).

\subsection{CAES}
The Dual-SOC model for CAES dispatch was proposed in \cite{AACAES}, where electricity are stored in the form of compressed air in the air tank (ATK), and heat energy are stored in the hot oil tank (HTK).
The air mass in the ATK changes according to (\ref{atk}) and the oil mass in HTK in (\ref{htk}).
Binary variables $\mu^{CS,c}_t$,$\mu^{CS,d}_t$,$\mu^{CS,h}_t$ are introduced to indicate whether the CAES is working at 'charging', 'discharging', 'heating' mode at time $t$.
The restriction (\ref{ncd}) means that charging and discharging simultaneously is not allowed.
When working at 'charging' mode (i.e. $\mu^{CS,c}_t=1$), the charging power is a function of the air, oil mass flow rate at charging side and ambient temperature (\ref{pcsc}).
When $\mu^{CS,d}_t=1$, the discharging power is a function of the air and oil mass flow rate at discharging side (\ref{pcsd}).
When $\mu^{CS,h}_t=1$, the heat power is a function of the oil mass flow rate at heating side (\ref{heatingCAES}).
However, when some $\mu^{CS,x}_t=0, x \in \{c,d,h\}$, the respective power and mass flows are actually set to 0.

\subsection{PDN}
A widely adopted model for the PDN is the linearized Dist-Flow equations \cite{LinDistFlow}\cite{IETPDN}.
Active and reactive power flow balance at bus $n$ are expressed as (\ref{Pbalanbus}),(\ref{Qbalanbus}), where the set of branches connected to bus $n$ is denoted by $B_n$.
Voltage drop of the branch $b$ is modeled as (\ref{voldrop}), where $b\in B_{n,n+1}$ indicates that power flows from the bus $n$ to bus $n+1$ through branch $b$.
Maximum allowable bus voltage deviation is given in (\ref{Vdev}).
Branch flow is restricted by the transmission line capacity as shown in (\ref{Pbmax}),(\ref{Qbmax}).
Only loads with lagging power factor are considered in this paper.

\subsection{DHN}
The constant-flow assumption \cite{dhnmdotfix} is adopted in the DHN model.
Thus, constraints associated with hydraulic conditions, e.g., continuity of mass flow and pressure drop relations \cite{dhnModel}, are not listed here.
Heat exchange relation is expressed as (\ref{heatExg}) generally, e.g., (i) heat power generated by heat sources (e.g., CHP, CAES and HP, denoted by $H^{G}_{n,t}$): $T^r_{n,t}$/$T^s_{n,t}$ is the temperature of the fluid in return/supply network that enters/leaves the heat source node; (ii) heat power consumed at a load node ($H^{L}_{n,t}$): $T^r_{n,t}$/$T^s_{n,t}$ is the temperature of the fluid in return/supply network that leaves/enters the load node.
A motor-driven circulation pump is always installed to keep a normal flow pattern in DHN \cite{Dissert}, with active power consumed expressed in (\ref{cP_act}) and reactive power in (\ref{cP_rea}).
Note that in the constant-flow model, hydraulic characteristics had been well designed, thus none of the terms in (\ref{cP_act})(\ref{cP_rea}) are decision variables.
Heat pumps and thermal energy storage units \cite{dhnModel} are involved.
Energy conversion of the HP is modeled by (\ref{ecohp}).
Heat energy stored in TES over time is modeled by (\ref{TESdyna}).
Temperature loss along a heat transmission pipeline, no matter in the supply or return network, is expressed in (\ref{hlahtp}).
There are 2 possibilities for a node $n$ in DHN.

\subsection{WSN}
A typical municipal WSN \cite{waterNet} is introduced here.
There are 3 types of 'nodes' in the WSN: reservoirs (RES), junctions and tanks (TK).
Reference head in the WSN is set at the reservoirs (i.e. $h^{RES}=0$), where water resource is deemed infinite.
Water flow at any junction $j$ in WSN is balanced at any time $t$ (\ref{Wnbalance}).
Water head at junction $j$ is bounded below by its minimum-allowable value (\ref{wnhmin}).
A TK in the WSN is used to store excess water that consumers do not need at the time.
Heads at two ports, i.e., $h^{TK,o}_t$ and $h^{TK,i}_t$, are both introduced for a tank.
$h^{TK,i}_t$ is used in its upstream hydraulic calculations, while $h^{TK,o}_t$ in downstream.
$h^{TK,i}_t$ is adjustable, so that the flow rate of water entering the tank can be regulated, while $h^{TK,o}_t$ is changed according to (\ref{wtank}).
The head variation between two adjacent nodes is related to the branch that bridges them (\ref{pplnd}), where $\Delta h_t(b)$ depends on the 3 types of $b$:
(i) Motor-driven variable-speed pumps (PM): used to provide pressure difference so that water could be delivered to consumers.
The hydraulic characteristic, affected by the pump speed $w$ is shown in (\ref{bispump}).
(ii) Pipes (PI). The head loss of a pipe is widely modeled as a quadratic function (\ref{bispipe}).
(iii) Pressure-reducing valves (RDV) could be installed on pipes to change their hydraulic characteristics, so that the overall network characteristic could be matched (in a better way) with those of pumps.
We denote the adjustable pressure drop of a RDV by $h^{RDV}_t$ and the total pressure drop is shown in (\ref{bisrdvpipe}).

\section{Model Linearization}
Although the 8 constrains appeared in (\ref{eq17})-(\ref{eq19}) are not readily linear, they are easy to be reformulated due to the discreteness of $\mu$.
Besides, you can even leave them unchanged when programming with MILP solvers such as Gurobi.
\subsection{The Piecewise Linearization (PWL) Method}
Two classes of method have been introduced to deal with nonlinearity in optimization problems: one based on the Taylor expansion \cite{taylor} (denoted by 'DER' since derivatives are used), the other based on the convex combination of the adjacent points (denoted by 'CONV') \cite{bet_pwl}.
An intuitive comparison of the 2 methods are conducted in Fig. \ref{der_conv}, where the black curve needed to be linearized is the polynomial function (denoted by $p(x)$ temporarily) comes from one constraint of the feasible region of CAES operation. The x-axis represents $\bar m^{od}_t$, and y-axis represents the lower bound of $\bar m^{ad}_t$, i.e., the constraint '$\bar m^{ad}_t \ge p(\bar m^{od}_t)$' should not be violated under discharging mode (details in \cite{AACAES}).
As indicated in Fig. \ref{der_conv}, the feasible region of $x$ are divided into 4 segments by the 5 points $x_i,i\in \{0,1,2,3,4\}$.
When '$y=y_a$' is imposed (the horizontal dashed line in Case a), the 3 outcomes indicated by the vertical dashed lines from left to right in order are: (i) PWL result by the DER method, (ii) the precise result and (iii) PWL result by the CONV method.
It seems that in this case, (i) and (iii) are both good approximations of (ii).
Now look at Case b: consider the optimization problem '$\min x: y=p(x)=y_b$'.
There are 4 vertical dashed lines in this case, the 3rd of which being the precise solution and the 4th being the PWL result by the CONV method.
It seems that CONV still behaves well.
However, the 1st and 2nd are both feasible points of PWL results by the DER method and the 1st gives better value ($\hat{x} \approx 0.76$), which is far from the precise result ($x\approx0.91$).

In summary: (i) The PWL results given by the DER method may not be unique ($\hat x$ can lies either on $[x_0,x_1]$ or $[x_1,x_2]$, shown in Case b), which possibly cause large deviation from the precise result. (ii) The DER method requires the function being approximated to be differentiable, which is not realistic for the data-sheet-based models (e.g., the pumps in WSN, discussed later).
Thus, the CONV-PWL method is applied in this paper.
PWL for 1-dim function (curve) is listed as Algorithm \ref{pwl1d}.
PWL for 2-dim function (surface) is listed as Algorithm \ref{pwl2d}.
\textit{Remark}:(i) Line \ref{line6} in Algorithm \ref{pwl1d}, Line \ref{line7},\ref{line10},\ref{line16} in Algorithm \ref{pwl2d} contain 'indicator constraints', Line \ref{line16} in Algorithm \ref{pwl2d} contain 'and constraints'.
Though not readily simple linear, modern solvers provide APIs for these types of constraints, still in the scope of MILP.
(ii) For the 2-dim function PWL, $(x,y)$ is a convex combination of the 4 extreme points of a rectangle.
According to the Caratheodory's theorem, the point $(x,y)$ can actually be represented as a convex combination of $\le 3$ points (instead of the original 4).
But this does not bother, since the fundamental LP solver in most MILP solvers is simplex-based, generating 'basic' solutions.
This implies that if $(x,y)$ could be represented as a non-degenerate convex combination of $N$ points, the solver would not output a non-degenerate combination of more than $N$ points.
(iii) There are 2 nonlinearities (from the perspective of decision variables) in CAES model, $f^{CS,Pd}$ and $\Omega_2$, both in (\ref{pcsd}), with the latter already mentioned in the context of Fig. \ref{der_conv}.
And the former can be linearized with Algorithm \ref{pwl2d}.
(iv) There are also 2 nonlinearities in the WSN model, pipe (\ref{bispipe}) and pump (\ref{bispump})(\ref{ppc}).
For the pipe, volumetric flow rate $q$ is unbounded unbounded above, which can be treated: 1, artificially impose an upper bound; 2, introduce one more variable $l^{end}$ (Line \ref{line3}, Algorithm \ref{pwl1d}) whose UB is relaxed to $\infty$, and the meaning of the expression '$l^{end}x_{N}+(1-l^{end}x_{N-1})$' is changed to a ray (same expression for $y$).

\subsection{The Linear Variable-speed Pump Model}\label{mypmsec}
Indeed, a pump used in the WSN is not an ideal component.
What engineers owned are experimental data-sheets provided by manufactures \cite{pumpModel}.
As mentioned earlier, modeling of the hydraulic (\ref{bispump}) and power (\ref{ppc}) characteristics is the focus.
One way is to model the head gain as a polynomial function of flow rate and pump speed \cite{waterNet}.
Although being concise, the nonlinearity would cause inconvenience for the optimization process.
Another way is to model a constant-speed pump, thus the head gain could be represented as a linear function of flow rate \cite{linpump}.
This model, however, could be over-simplified compared with the real data.
And the constant-speed restriction made the operation of WSN less flexible.
Inspired by these methods, in this paper, the pump speed is firstly discretized and indicated by an integer variable.
Then, PWL functions are constructed directly based on the data sheet under each speed level (using Algorithm \ref{pwl1d}).
As an example, a model is built based on data from \cite{pumpModel}, where the data under $w=1525$ and $1182$rpm are listed.
The original curve and the 2-segment PWL curves are compared in Fig. \ref{pump2model}.
It is evident that the PWL method gives a reasonable approximation under both speed levels.

Firstly, a small case is considered, where we consider only a scenario, and 4-stage problem where $\Delta t=6h$.
\textit{Model Settings}: (i) WSN: head loss coefficient of pipes $K_b=1.016lD^{-5}$ [m/$({\text{m}}^3/\text{s})^2$], where the numeral values $l$ and $D$ are listed in Table \ref{wNettable}. Parameters of Pump p0/p1 are given in Fig. \ref{pump2model} (R).
For the tank, $A^{TK} = 160\text{m}^2$, water level is restricted: $h_t^{TK,o}\le70\text{m}$.
(ii) CAES: settings are the same as \cite{AACAES}, except that the base value of $\bar m^{ac}_t$, $\bar m^{oc}_t$, $\bar m^{ad}_t$, $\bar m^{od}_t$, $\bar m^{oh}_t$ are changed to 445, 193, 435, 189, 378 g/s, respectively and the base value of $\bar P^{CS,c}_t$, $\bar P^{CS,d}_t$, $\bar H^{CS}_t$ are changed to 0.5, 0.5, 0.25 MW respectively.
(iii) CHPs: 4 identical units are considered. For each unit: $P^{CHP,A/B/C/D}_u$ are 0.4, 0.25, 0.08, 0.17 and $H^{CHP,A/B/C/D}_u$ are 0, 0.12, 0.05, 0 respectively (MW).
$\eta_u^{CHP,P}$, $\eta_u^{CHP,H}$, $\beta$ are 0.015MWh/kg, 0.45, 0.5 respectively.
$C^{CHP,st}_u$, $C^{CHP,sh}_u$ are both 1044yuan.

\subsection{Performance of The Pump in WSN}
A case is firstly designed to illustrate the advantages of the pump model proposed in \ref{mypmsec}, as shown in Fig. \ref{smallsysgraph}.
Suppose that pipe \textit{1},\textit{2} and pump p1 mulfunction together and the water delivery path becomes: Reservoir $\to$ p0 $\to$ pipe \textit{0} $\to$ junction \underline{1} (Fig. \ref{smallsysgraph}).
Styles and meanings of the curves for the pump (p0) remains unchanged compared with the 2nd subplot in Fig. \ref{pump2model}, with only a black curve denoting the pipe (\textit{0}) characteristic newly added in the 1st subplot in Fig. \ref{pmpicros}.
It is evident that when the pump is running in the high-speed level, its H-q curve (red solid) does not match with the pipe.
That is to say, if we built a constant (high) speed pump model, there would be no feasible solution in this case.
However, the black curve and the low-speed H-q (green solid) do intersect, indicating the existence of a normal working condition.
Therefore, a variable-speed pump could provide more flexibility for the operation of WSN.
Besides, there is indeed another way to avoid infeasibility: to set the head loss of the RDV r0 to a proper value (e.g., 10m).
Then the new H-q curve of the branch is changed to what the 2nd subplot exhibits.
Although being feasible at the high-speed level, the power consumption rises to about 550kW, much higher than that at the lower speed (about 250kW).
This is due to the high energy loss of using RDVs.
