As an outcome of #317, we may want to:

  • take advantage of the 脱-Shapefile (de-shapefile) movement led by @mapconcierge
  • to collect the use cases of geospatial open data
  • so that we can positively think about alternatives that meet each major use cases.

Candidate alternatives might be:

  • GeoJSON
  • FlatGeobuf
  • PMTiles
  • GeoParquet

Possible use cases might be:

  • providing modern interface to desktop GIS
  • implement more geo-enabled web

@hfu thinks that "geo-enabled web" can be another way of describing "Smart Maps" :-)

  • We will be creating a Discord channel for that, by @albertkun.
