We believe in the value of informed decision-making supported by modern web map technologies. That is why the UN Smart Maps Group (SMG), the seventh domain working group under the UN Open GIS Initiative joined together and is combining efforts under the vision that we keep web maps open for a better world.
We are a volunteer group of engineers, practitioners, and educators whose focus in SMG is to test new technologies for future geospatial operations. Our recent tasks include prototyping a distributed digital twin that makes use of OGC 3D Tiles, PMTiles, and InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) and experimenting with open-source large language model (LLM) implementations.
Taking the privilege of a UN Open GIS Initiative working group, we learn UN Operations requirements and we work with the UN Missions and UN service organizations. We are also making use of our technologies which are tested within SMG, for tasks and missions of the organizations of the SMG participants.
We know the value of an open community. Anyone can join the UN Smart Maps Group. We welcome contributions from anyone. Let’s keep web maps open for a better world.
