It appears to me, that Vega Strike is missing a certain element of freedom, other games of this nature take a far more fast paced approach, a little more liberal with the physics as it were but Vega Strike has always strived to follow in the veins of a more Simulatory experience. Therefore I propose taking this a step further.
There are times when flying around, particular long distance when your ship is stationary for a while and this might even be an excuse the slow the ships down a notch. This down time could be better put to use doing some manual exploration of the ship.
An 3d environment, perhaps using an fps-esque engine to wander around the ship/planet actually meet and interact with characters and objects (repairs? Damage control?) and then go back to flying the ship.
