Here's what we have learnt thus far from our initial run of classes both internally and externally. We will probably take the discussion here and come up with a thorough list of requirements schools and organizations need to fulfill so class sessions can be run as smoothly as possible.
1. All students must be connected to the same video conferencing service
The main instructor needs to be able to see students' screens when necessary to aid debugging, and help when students are stuck on a specific step. Failure to prepare this stage may result in the inability to resolve student issues, or to resolve issues in a timely manner.
2. Students should bring their own headset
Unless the school is equipped with proper video conferencing equipment or a setup that enables voice communications over speakers that does not result in audio feedback loops, students should always bring their own headsets so they are able to ask questions. Failure to prepare the equipment will limit interactions to the chatbox.
3. Students should be signed in to the video conferencing service with their real names, or names they will answer to
Classes where students are using other accounts will result in confusion for both instructor and teacher. I highly recommend making sure students are logged into their own accounts, or sessions are started allowing all students to write their own names first before entry.
4. Teachers should be present in the classroom at all times
If schools insist on a hybrid model of learning with students physically present in class while the instructor is dialing in remotely, they should always have a person on staff in class. Having teachers absent is no different from doing instructions with students from home, and when decisions need to be made that involve the class, may make the situation more complicated than it needs to be.
5. Teachers unfamiliar with the class should join in as a student
Rather than relying completely on the instructor, teachers who are responsible for this class should join in the lesson, so they too can assist students who have issues with their setup.
