I get the overlay warning message "Login is required to play" but there's no pop up to log in, and no obvious button to trigger such a pop up. Running lollipop 5.1

As I see you found workaround for this issue. Do you suspect what might be a reason?

I don't know. Phone restart didn't work. My solution was to uninstall Play Games (to as far as the OS would let me), uninstall Hanabi, re-install Play Games, re-install Hanabi. Maybe the service just wasn't hooking in right for some reason?
