Selecting a tree takes 2 seconds

When I tap my iPhone 6 screen to select a tree it takes 2 seconds before the marker is shown, both outdoors using a cellular connection and in the office using wifi. Can't we do better?

In a non-scientific test with my iPhone 6s on wifi selecting trees on my test map with 4 trees was noticeably faster than PhillyTreeMap. If that behavior is consistent and repeatable it is a good clue as to where to start looking for performance bottlenecks.
