Thursday April 20th,
6pm-?
Our next hacknight is this Thursday at VarageSale. Come fiddle with neurotech software and meet other neurotechers.
Current Projects:
- Neurodoro (Developing a CNN-based machine learning algorithm to detect focus and mental fatigue; Keras, Tensorflow)
- EEG 101 (Interactive EEG tutorial; Java, signal processing, data collection for offline mode!)
- Gamma light (Detecting increases in neural gamma frequency during optical gamma stimulation; Xamarin mobile app, Java)
- EEG and VR? Get an example Unity app running with Muse integration
If you're a first time hack attendee, PM me to be added to the guest list. All you regulars, we'll see you there!
4/18/2017 6:00 PM
graeme :
If anyone gets a Unity VR app running and integrated with Muse, I'd love to see it, and I might have a part time job for you.
4/18/2017 6:12 PM
yannick :
We did and Im sure youd love to see the integrated Muse-IO console in Unity, plotting the EEG signal.
4/19/2017 3:08 AM
sydneyneurotechx :
graeme Maybe post the VR/EEG idea in Opportunities?
4/19/2017 3:08 AM
sydneyneurotechx :
Unless you want people specifically from TO
4/19/2017 3:28 AM
graeme :
Yeah, we're just looking for someone who can come in and provide some basic unity support on experimentation with Muse+Vive. Low level signal integration and neuroscience validation stuff moreso than cool BCI experiences. Neurotech enthusiasts with that kind of experience and interest welcome to apply.
4/20/2017 4:14 PM

NeuroTechTO Hacknight: Classifier testing edition
Wednesday, May 17, 7-11pm
VarageSale
111 Peter St, Suite 901
Just got back from vacation and really looking forward to this week's hacknight:
- EEG 101 has a Gaussian Naive Bayes classifier! This week we'll implement in React Native and test it
- Neurodoro has a functional cognitive test! Now we can collect data and run TPOT to look for regression algorithms that can correlate EEG data with cognitive performance
- As always, any other ideas and projects are welcome
5/16/2017 1:38 PM
bryan_j :
Hey <!channel>! NeuroTechTO has an event next week, you may have heard, and we have some space left for exhibitors! If you have a cool EEG-based project on the go, email mailto:[email protected]|[email protected] if you would like to showcase. Thanks!

Hey guys,
Mozilla's Open Sprint is coming up on Thursday and Friday June 1-2nd and Mozilla HQ in Toronto is going to open their offices both days to host people who want a co-working space.
The Open Sprint is a global 2-day coding sprint for many different open science projects. We happen to have two projects on the list! EEG 101 and NeuroTechEDU.
If you're in Toronto and interested in coming to Mozilla to hack together, register here. I'll be there both days working on EEG 101.

<!channel> Hey all, just another heads-up about the Mozilla event this week. Instead of a traditional hacknight, we'll be attending and help organize the opening of the Mozilla offices to participants in the Mozilla Global Sprint: https://mozilla.github.io/global-sprint/projects/
If you're interested in dropping by to contribute to EEG 101 or any of the other Global Sprint projects https://mozilla.github.io/global-sprint/projects/, register here: https://ti.to/Mozilla/global-sprint-toronto/with/tlcivmz5efg
There's still some space available and all sorts of skills are needed, from Java, Python, and JavaScript to literature reviews, UI design, and Machine Learning

6/5/2017 7:07 PM
bryan_j :
Welcome 0ishe - it's about time 😉
6/6/2017 3:06 AM
bryan_j :
0ishe well we are lucky to have you! Have you been working on any of the NTTO projects recently?
6/6/2017 12:48 PM
0ishe :
bryan_j I'm glad to be a part of this wonderful community!
I haven't been working on NTTO projects in particular. However, I've been working with the UofT neurotech club.
We're currently trying to connect to an ADS1299 (the analog front-end chip behind the openbci 8-channel board). We think it would be really cool if we can connect a raspberry pi to it.
I've also been trying to work with the muse. I've had to do a lot of learning on client-server connections and learned the python Qt framework to run my own program with the muse. Here is the GUI I implemented to display the EEG signals in real-time. My next step is to include a way to play audio and sync it with the EEG readings so that I can start collecting data.
6/6/2017 12:50 PM
0ishe :
btw bryan_j I hear you have an interesting hardware idea
I'd love to hear
6/6/2017 4:44 PM
bryan_j :
0ishe: I do indeed and I would love to tell you! We can discuss it at the next hack night 😄

6/13/2017 1:26 AM
dano :
Hey guys,
Doesn't look like we'll be having an official Hacknight this Thursday. Pushing that back to next week.
6/13/2017 1:40 AM
bryan_j :
^ will give us more time to prep the awesomeness that will happen next Thursday! Be ready :)
6/15/2017 4:26 PM
sunnyp :
dano What will you guys be working on at the next hackathon?
6/15/2017 6:35 PM
dano :
Our next hacknight (on the 22nd) should be pretty fun. We'll be working on the EEG 101 and Neurodoro apps, both of which will benefit from getting Muses on as many foreheads as possible.
For EEG 101 we're going to be testing the prototype of our general purpose Guassian Naive Bayes classifier for a BCI and for Neurodor we're trying to build a large dataset of cognitive testing data that we can use to train an attention classifier.
6/16/2017 12:02 AM
dano :
Here is the official BrainBrowse exhibit document. We'll use it to keep track of everything that we'll demo at the event, including how much needs to be done and who needs to do it
6/16/2017 2:14 AM
bryan_j :
dano awesome :)
6/17/2017 3:05 AM
sunnyp :
dano Thanks!
6/17/2017 3:06 AM
sunnyp :
Are any of you attending the Big Data Toronto conference on the 20th and 21st?
6/17/2017 5:27 PM
bryan_j :
sunnyp: I'm out of the country :( will be there?
6/17/2017 9:22 PM
sunnyp :
I most definitely will! Did you want me to check anything out for you?
6/17/2017 9:27 PM
sunnyp :
dano: Youve got some pretty interesting projects going on in that document. If you dont mind Id like to swing by the hacknight to get a feel for it and help out in any way I can. I dont have any gear besides my laptop though&. will that be ok?
6/17/2017 10:29 PM
dano :
Sounds great, man. We have plenty of gear that we can hook you up with.
I'll provide more info on the upcoming hacknight in this channel as things get sorted out
6/19/2017 10:02 PM

Dr. Steve Prescott is joining the team to discuss the medical applications of neurotechnology. In his lab, Steve's ultimate goal is to uncover how the nervous system processes pain-related sensory information and how chronic pain arises. Those findings have broad applications but we also consider the specific consequences of neural information processing for pain.

As some of you may know, next week we are trying to go bigger and better than ever with our hacknight! We'll be marketing the event to a much wider audience, holding an intro to BCI development workshop for noobs, and providing food.
Details:
Tuesday, September 5th, 6-10pm
Location: secret (for now)
If you're interested in attending, please fill out this quick registration form https://goo.gl/forms/NSVHsO03f6y3z3In1.
It's mostly for limiting the number of people who want to take the workshop and filtering out disruptive neuro-hypers. Anyone who's come to a hacknight before is welcome to come.

I would like to point the Toronto community and friends of the community to the following internship opportunity. It's an exciting opportunity for someone who likes the interface of business and science. Check it out here:

albertle would know about engineering timetables
For computer science / software engineering, our timetables change all the time; we have lecture sections in both weekdays and weeknights
9/25/2017 9:49 PM
albertle :
jee for engineering, I think it'd be safe to assume that classes run during the day, with most first and second year classes finishing before 7. Beyond second year, everyone has different schedules, so it's usually a mix of day and evening lectures.
9/25/2017 9:52 PM
jee :
sayan_faraz albertle Thanks heaps for the info. Would you be okay to share your curriculum sheet/s for me to take a look at?
9/25/2017 9:53 PM
albertle :
Are you looking for specific courses?
9/26/2017 12:30 AM
dennlinger :
I can also share some of my insights on CS at UofT. Depending on the classes, you generally have multiple sections to choose from. Generally, some of them are during the daytime, while other classes are for example one huge lecture between 6-9pm. The bigger the course (generally, 1st and 2nd year are larger), the more section a course offers. Mine (3rd and 4th year) offer mostly 2 different sections.

Hey crew, whos got a hankering for some neurohacking? Well be satisfying our cravings this week at on Tuesday the 17th, (thats tomorrow night) at VarageSale.
A little review of our two main projects:
An interactive introduction to EEG data and what can be done with it, including a small example of a Brain-Computer Interface. Its the perfect entry-point for those new to neuroscience. Right now new lessons on ERPs are being developed, the Android version is being ported over to iOS, and support is being added for as many languages as possible.
- Neurodoro ( https://github.com/neurotechx/neurodoro )
Currently in progress, Neurodoro is a revamp of the pomodoro technique, which uses a timer to structure working sessions and break times. Neurodoro uses EEG recorded while working to replace the timer with brain-responsive recommendations for when to take break from your focused activity. Multiple data prep and attention classification strategies are being explored, including a new RNN setup thats (maybe) almost functional. The app is in ReactNative and is still missing a few key features. Were also starting to think about setting up a server and a database for collecting training data.
In addition to those, a couple people are working on extracting keystrokes from EEG, and new project ideas are always welcome!
See you there.

Hey Toronto! We are coding in the city again tomorrow night. Come bring your friends, talk about neuroscience, fiddle around with your passion projects, and let us record your brainwaves!
We'll be at Interaxon's meditation room this time, 511 King St W. Getting started at 7pm and going until whenever.
NTTO will be hosting a booth at the upcoming We are Wearables event on the 29th and we'd love to have some new demos to show off. The neurodoro team's in a mad dash towards creating a store-ready, data-gathering version of the app to be ready by then and we've also got a pretty well defined EEG/VR project to tackle if anyone's interested in writing some JS.
See you guys then!

Great breakdown of why the CFIA has likely banned Soylent in Canada. Outdated and bureaucratic standards. Hopefully we won't have to wait too long!

Hey everybody,
>
>
As promised, the frenetic once-a-week hacknight frequency continues. This week, we're moving back to our traditional Thursday time slot (sorry, Tom!), and checking out a fresh new location.
>
>
Goodbye VarageSale, hello Top Hat!
>
>
Time: Thursday the 16th, 6pm - 9pmish
>
Location: Top Hat, 151 Bloor St W, Suite 200.

Other things to keep in mind:

>
NeuroTechTO is going to be hosting a booth at the upcoming Tech for Good meetup by We Are Wearables at MaRS on November 29th. We'll be demoing EEG 101, Neurodoro, and either the T-rex Blinks Runner or the Dharma Defender VR game I've been working on. Definitely consider coming out, and if you want us to talk about your project, let us know.

NeuroTechX is looking for a Canadian Community Manager. If you want to make some connections in the neurotech scene, gain some leadership and organizational experience, and help the community grow you should consider giving it a shot. It's a volunteer position, but should only take about 5 hours per week.
