Context: While reviewing our website, Adria uncovered a technical problem with how our localization is set up and implications for SEO. More info below:
There is no way to get to content that isn't in the /en/ directory from within the site. There are two underlying issues:
{quote}# The default domain address, https://foundation.mozilla.org/ , automatically redirects users to content. A user that doesn't specify a browser language (e.g. a search engine bot) is defaulted into the /en/ content. We handle this on mozilla.org by having a language selection page that appears to users with no Accept-Language header, and links to all of our localized sites (image below).
The language switcher doesn't link to the other languages: It uses a form submit, which is an action, and therefore not accessible to search engine bots.
What is the outcome of this? Well, your /en/ content is being over-emphasized, and the other content looks like it isn't particularly important to you and you don't care if users can find it. That will make it more difficult for us to rank non-English content in non-English directories. {quote}
Request: Please investigate and outline if there is a way to solve these issues with our current website by implementing a a language selection page or linking to other languages rather than a form submit.
