When I was checking for our model stratification results against obs in the SO, I looked at publications with in-situ obs. So, one option is to do a more thorough job and pull out some values for different depth ranges, but unfortunately I don't see how this could be made general in terms of depth values.
I'm not sure whether the climatology is helpful, particularly on the Antarctic continental shelf, but maybe better than nothing?
Another option would be to average the WOA18 and/or MEOP individual obs as opposed to the climatology.
