dir=${file%/*}

If the compiler is given a file that does not have the parent directory in name, it will not run the script, i.e.

$ compiler project.md

/home/user/.local/bin/compiler: line 19: cd: project.md: Not a directory

so maybe use something like dir=$(dirname "${file}")
