Apart from the ergative marker being of r-type (*balʁu-ra* fish.OBL-ERG) or non-r-type (*gagaj-e* uncle-ERG, *gagaj-Ø* uncle-ERG), it may either contain (*balʁu-ra* fish.OBL-ERG, *gagaj-e* uncle-ERG) or lack (*balʁu-r* fish.OBL-ERG, *gagaj-Ø* uncle-ERG) the final vowel. This feature shows whether an alternative to the first reaction is also possible in terms of vocalic vs. non-vocalic ergative marker. For example, if the speaker's first reaction was *balʁu-ra* (fish.OBL-ERG), we asked if it is possible to say *balʁu-r*, and vice versa. If the alternative variant is possible, we report variation. We elicited four nouns in the singular and in the plural: ‘uncle’ (SG) and ‘uncle’ (PL) (animate, human), ‘fish’ (SG) and ‘fish’ (PL) (animate, non-human), ‘river’ (SG) and ‘rock’ (PL) (inanimate, non-human). The elicited contexts were as follows: ‘(My) uncle helped me to build a house’, ‘(My) uncles helped me to build a house’, ‘The fish (SG) ate the fly’, ‘The fish (PL) ate the flies’, ‘The river demolished the bridge’, ‘The rocks broke the roof’. The maps show whether variation between vocalic ergative marker vs. non-vocalic ergative marker is attested.
