Heaven. My server for Quake will now be up all the time
(except when W95 needs dusting). The Linux version is
'as the QTEST' for Linux - and its excellent.
Try it and see:

QUICK AND DIRTY FOR THE BRAVE:

Put xquake and xf86quake in the directory where quake.exe is or get the
"id1" subdirectory and its data files and put it above that. First,
run "runme" to submit your machine configuration. Then run "xquake"
or "xf86quake" to play the game. Enjoy.

Linux Quake Out
One day after I say probably next week--d'oh! Here's Linux Quake 1.01 (317 KB), from LEK Internet Services. Ported by Dave Taylor of Crack Dot Com, Inc.
Thanks to Sean Martin of Redwood's Quake Page for dropping me a line to keep me in the loop (he predicted the release date a week ago).

From the readme:

	A NOTE FROM DAVE TAYLOR

Crack is out of time. We are doing full-time development of our next game and have plenty on our plates. We can merge in one or two more versions of Quake (if necessary) and release them, but we will not be fixing bugs unless they're trivial.

On the bright side, our next game will be a lot of fun and will
come out sooner if we're not distracted. This was written
on 8/7/96. Crack should have a new web site up in a couple
weeks to show what we're up to.

id Software is focusing on the next technology. Don't bug 'em
about the Linux ports! For the latest information on what they're
up to, finger [email protected] or check out their web site.

SVGA Linux Quake
Zoid has completed a "late beta" of SVGA Linux Quake, which is available on Threewave. This is an unsupported release. Also congrats to Zoid in his new job.

Ooops, I accidentally forgot to mention that Zoid has an SVGALinux Quake .99 out. To read more, see the Threewave page. In other Linux news, McAfee announced the first Linux virus has been found.

ANNOUNCEMENT: SVGAlib Quake is out!
Bryson Borg
10 Feb 1997

hello.
a month or two ago there was a rather lengthly thread going on about the
linux port of quake for X. i hope it's not inappropriate now to use this
space to mention that a port of quake for SVGAlib has been released. it
rocks. my framerate (as measured by the TIMEREFRESH command) is almost
twice what it was with xf86quake, and a good 25% faster than in DOS
(FWIW, 100MHz P5, 32MB 70ns RAM, crappy monitor). it is available at
ftp.cdrom.com/.11/idgames2/more_idstuff as squake-linux-0.99.tar.gz.

and a big, gruesome salute goes to Dave 'Zoid' Kirsch for doing the drudge
work of porting this fine application to the finest of all operating
systems, linux, and giving another connotation to the phrase "a hacker's OS."

New GLQuake GLQuakeWorld, QW Server
Okay, the problems abated, here are the missing goodies: the full QuakeWorld 2.0 client install (1.4 MB) which includes QuakeSpy 5.3 and the GL QuakeWorld client, the new GLQuake (269 KB), which, like the GLQW client, uses 8 bit textures for greatly enhanced performance, the QuakeWorld server (221 KB): it should be noted that only version 2.0 clients can connect to 2.0 servers, though the new client can still connect to older servers. Finally, for the UNIX aficionados, here's the Linux client (163 KB) the Linux server (200KB), and the new SVGALib Quake (200 KB).

This is a windowed version that is generic for X11. It runs in a window
and can be resized. You can specify a starting window size with:
	-width <width>
	-height <height>
	-winsize <width> <height>
Default is 320x200. It works in 16bit modes, but it's slower (twice as many
bytes to copy).

New GLQuake Releases
Zoid sent along word that some new GLQuake releases are available: GLQuake 0.97 (393 KB) fixes the sprite bug from the previous version, and adds independent console sizing (such as a 320x200 scaled console when running at 640x480) and support for SGI Multitexture extensions for high-end Voodoo (Obsidian) and other 3D cards. Also newly released is GLQuake for Linux (449 KB) which requires a 3DFX Voodoo Graphics card (not Voodoo RUSH) and Linux 2.0, and finally, GLQuakeWorld for Linux (412 KB), which again requires 3DFX Voodoo Graphics (not Voodoo RUSH) and Linux 2.0. Also available on id's ftp.site.
