Found the following issues:

a) backspace when typing did not work
b) enter did not use typed text, had to select Create xxxxx first
c) no edit of what typed prior to hitting Build button

might need a workaround or alternative. Potentially an issue where React components in Atom do not receive key events normally. https://discuss.atom.io/t/onkeydown-react-event-does-not-fire-in-atom-package/59543
